Tuesday, July 6, 1999 - The Michigan Daily - 11 'k S NI 1600 where a master violinmaker cre- ates his masterpiece: The red violin. As events unfold and time passes, we absorb the red violin's enriching multi- cultural experiences through the differ- ent lives it touches. the blending of these different time periods (each with its own unique plot line), which are enhanced by elegant music, make this movie a masterpiece. Girard carefully ties each era into the next by continuously connecting the past to the present partly through the enigmatic twists of a tarot card reading, and partly through presenting each new "life" of the red violin as a puzzle piece to the present (a violin auction in Montreal). The film is a brilliant cre- ation that stands out in the current glut of summer movies. Jeremy Salvatori The boys from Sooth Park Incite a war with Canada after seeing an "R" rated film. Adrien Brody and John Leguizamo star in t Summer of Sam Touchstone Pictures At the Ann Arbor 1&2 and Showcase "Summer of Sam" shocks. "Sam" is director Spike Lee's latest film venture and his furthest departure from his typ- ical political commentaries. 'Sam" is an intimate portrait of the ayton and Clarece neighborhoods in New York City during its hottest, and most dangerous, summer: The summer of'77 -- the summer of the .44 Caliber Killer, or the Son of Sam. The film centers around the rela- tionship between Vinny (John Laguizamo) and Dionna (Mira Sorvino). Vinny, a swinger and hair dresser with a guilty conscience, sees his marriage slipping through his Ids just as the Son of Sam murders b in. While cheating on his wife he sees the killer and spends the remain- der of the film in fear. Vinny and friends, the police, and just about everyone else has their list of suspects and everyone is on a list. While the Son of Sam murders are not the central points of the film, they do serve as an interesting back drop for tl film. John Laguizamo's perfor- ce is good, especially considering his comedic background. The film is a unique venture for Spike Lee content wise and is pulled off well. "Sam" con- tains Lee's trademark style, from his personal cameo to his novel camera angles. Though set in '77, the costumes are period precise without being cliche or flamboyant. Though the film is gory, its use is jus- tified. Overall, "Summer of Sam" is exciting and atypical. 0 Brian Norr-is An Ideal Husband Miramax Pictures At the Michigan Theater and Showcase "An Ideal Husband" is the ideal date movie. et in 1895 England, Lord Arthur y (Rupert Everett), a rich, hand- some, and very charming bachelor, gets pressure from is prudish father and a multitude of bachelorettes to finally set- tle down, citing him as the "ideal hus- Courtesy of he Spike Lee film "Summer band."
