Conrad headlines postseason awards

By Jon Zemke
Daily Sports Writer
Winning had become synonymous with
the Michigan softball team in 1999. After
winning most of its games last season the
Wolverines also succeeded in picking up a
lot of post season awards.
Former co-captain Traci Conrad led the
way with five citations. She won her third
consecutive GTE Academic All-America
award. Conrad was a first team firstbase-
an on the '98 All-America and made the
second team for the '99 season. Conrad,
who is a Sports Management and
Communication major, graduated after
winning her fourth-consecutive Michigan
Athletic Academic Achievement award.

Conrad also set Michigan and Big Ten
records in hits with 345 and in runs scored
with 223. She was named the Big Ten
player of the year for the second year in a
row this season.
The All-American was the third pick in
the Women's Pro Softball League. She is
currently playing professionally for the
Akron Racers for the summer.
She also tied Michigan softball legend
Sara Griffin for most all-America distinc-
tions in Michigan softball history - win-
ning her third in a row. Conrad's third
team finish follows her previous two first
team placings.
Fellow graduate Cathy Davie and Big
Ten freshman of the year Kelsey Kollen

also made the all-American team. Davie
was named as the second team all-
America left fielder and Kollen was
named All-American second team second
baseman. Both were also all-Big Ten first
team selections at the respective positions.
All three Wolverines also made the all-
Great Lakes Region first team along with
sophomore rightfielder Melissa Taylor
and pitcher Marie Barda. All five were
first team honorees. Freshman catcher
Stefanie Volpe also made the second team
as a utility player - playing both catcher
and at the designated player position.
Barda pitched to a 22-4 record and a
1.12 ERA to lead the Wolverine pitching
