Monday, June 14, 1999 - The Michian Dail -1 Cibo Matto Stereo Type A WB Records ** Cibo Matto means "crazy food" in Italian. Carrying this concept musically, only those with a wide range of musical tastes will find Cibo Matto's new disc delightful to the musical palate. Yuka Honda, who handles most of the group's production, offers a fasci- nating smorgasbord of musical gen- res with her best offering to date. At times, however, it is the loss of uniti due to the wide vatiety that detracts from the album as a whole. Some transi- tions, such as the introduction of growl- ing metal riffs into the funky and melo- dious "Lint of Love" and later in "Blue Train" leave the listener confused. Credit to Cibo Matto for creating this highly creative album, but the use of too many ingredients in it makes it an over- all offering that is hard to digest. William Dose CCuese oWane nur ds cors Cibo Matto's new album falls to delight Red Hot Chili Peppers Californication Warner Bros. Out of the many Red Hot Chili Peppers albums released over the st 15 years, "Californication" mes closest to matching the bril- liant perfection of "Blood Sugar Sex Magic." "Californication" offers a, diverse blend of well-written songs, mixing the funky rock side of the Chili Peppers with their more melodic, uplifting side. A few songs on the album have the potential to be the next "Under the *idge." The absolutely beautiful chorus of "Otlierside" and the mood of "This Velvet Glove" just beg for a great video. With one or two more psychedelic jam songs and more- narrative, less-personal lyrics, "Californication" would be a truly timeless album. Jason Birctmeier Jamiroquai Synkronized Sony Music Entertainment Jamiroquai's latest album, "Synkronized," provides the listener with a groovy mix of jazz, funk, and disco. As scary as the thought of listen- ing to a disco revival group today may be, Jamiroquai manages to pull it off without sounding like The Village People. For those who don't like disco, there are still plenty of tracks that do not to disappoint in helping you shake your booty. Ranging from the piano and violin dominated "King For A Day" to the up tempo ear candy of the techno-funk "Supersonic," there is enough vari- ety to satisfy a wide range of tastes. Jamiroquai's latest tracks are syn- cronized to their signature style of taking familiar musical elements from the past and producing some- thing new.
