Have these Dawson's execs simply decided to lean on the surprising success of the recent teen hit "She's All That?" One wonders whether it's purely financial ideals or shrewd coincidence at work. "Songs From Dawson's Creek" also features several prominent female artists including Sophie B. Hawkins and Heather Nova. The album is rounded up with Shooter's "Life's a Bitch," the annoy- ing "Shimmer" by the momentarily cool Shawn Mullins as well as several introspective pieces with PJ Olsson's courtesyofWarner,5't-ers Even big time TV stars get the blues. Sappy, sen- timental, at times abhorrant (try Jessica Simpson's "Did You Ever Love Somebody"), but generally emotional- ly fun, as you watch and recall your own high school daze and your past relationships with those countless Beckys or Sarahs, Mikes or Jeffs, coming each week in the eyes of one confused river kid Dawson Leary and his childhood soulmate Joey Potter. Chtis Cousino Neurosis Times of Grace Relapse Records A new cliche in the world of heavy music is that albums marketed as "the soundtrack to a new bleak millennium" or something worded in a similar fash- ion. Every record label and music reviewer these days seems to be slapping that phrase on every dark and heavy record in recent memory. The problem lying in the overuse of a phrase like that is that it becomes a has- sle to distinguish the "ka ka" from the "ooh la la!" Listening to Neurosis' new album "Times of Grace" it becomes awfully clear that this is prime "ooh la la!" dark, morose and heavy music. The boys of Neurosis have done it again and have constructed a monster of a release filled with tunes lush in sound layers and jagged with hard riffs. The songs may take their time to develop and progress but it's a trip well worth the effort. "Times of Grace" is a release that transcends any cliche and truly deserves to be labeled with the "soundtrack for a new bleak millennium" description. Ad/in Rosi Mo B. Dick Gangsta Harmony No Limit Records The range of styles on "Gangsta Harmony" make it the best No Limit Records album to date. While recent albums by Master P, Snoop Dogg and Silkk The Shocker have established No Limit as the premier label for gangsta rap, Mo B. Dick's album transcends the formulaic genre. Few of the 18 songs on "Gansta Harmony" sound similar musi- cally or vocally, much unlike the afore- mentioned rap albums by No Limit that have found enormous commercial suc- cess with America's youth. The variety of Dick's album arises from his role as a producer for No Limit. Though he may not have the rap- ping skills of Master P or Silkk, he sings quite well. Some of his R 'n' B influenced songs such as "Picture U & Me" prove that Dick can supply plenty of soul with his voice. Dick also show- cases his diverse musical production skills on songs such as "Twerk Some'm" and "Smoke My Life Away" when he blends hip-hop beats with R 'n' B and soul.
