POLL Continued from Page 12 ninth on the Big Ten career assist list, paced the Michigan attack, keeping it consistent with her solid passing. Outside hitter Sarah Jackson, second on the Michigan career kills list, led the Michigan offense with well-placed spikes and well-timed blocks. Perennial national powerhouse Penn State was selected as the unanimous No. I team in the con- ference. After finishing second in the NCAA Tournament a year ago, the Nittany Lions return 1997 Big Ten Player of the Year and first team all- America setter Bonnie Bremner and look to be the team to beat again. Bremner is one of four Lions voted to the pre- season all-Big Ten team, joined by Christy Cochran, Carrie Shonveld and Lauren Cacciamani. No Wolverines were named to the team, although the absence of middle blocker Karen Chase is somewhat surprising, considering she ceivedall-Big Ten honorable mention honors last ya. Chase, who was sidelined for much of the first half of the season with a back injury last year, -has .me of the best career hitting percentages in Michigan history. As the team's top two hitters, Chase and sopho- more Sarah Behnke will have to fill the gap left by Jackson's graduation Finding a replacement for, Mendoza might be a little tougher. Junior Carrie Ricker will probably get the starting setter job, but with Mendoza getting almost all the playing time the past two years, Ricker has very little experi- ence. Wisconsin and Michigan State round out the top three in the preseason poll. Wisconsin will be led by Kate Fitzgerald, Kelly Kennedy and Colleen Neels, all selected to the pre- season all-Big Ten team. Michigan State only placed one member on the team, but senior outside hitter Jenna Wrobel, a unanimous selection, is one of the top outside hit- ters in the conference. 1998 Preseason all-Big Ten volleyball team Setters * Jen Flynn, Ohio State * Bonnie Bremner, Penn State Colleen Neels, Wisconsin Outside Hitters * Jenna Wrobel, Michigan State Tracey Marshall, Illinois Nicole Branagh, Minnesota Dana Sterns, Ohio State * denotes unanimous selection Christy Cochran, Penn State Carrie Schonveld, Penn State Kate Fitzgerald, Wisconsin Middle Blockers Lauren Cacciamani, Penn State Christy Chapman, Ilinois Sara Sorrell, Illinois Kelly Kennedy, Wisconsin __ _ j Absofut Fridays Tanquerav Jack Call ik sue s ~ Over 25 Beers on Draft Including: Bels, Newcastle, Guinness & Youngs The University of Michigan WHAT'S Department of Recreational Sports HAPPENING INTRAMURAL SPORTS PROGRAM THANKS!
