18 - The Michigan Daily - Monday, June 29, 1998 'M' golfer paralyzed By Rick Freeman Daily Sports Writer A Michigan golfer has been in the Intensive Care Unit of a Milwaukee hos- pital since June 19, paralyzed after diving off the deck of a friend's boat on Lake Michigan. Brent Baribeau, who is on the reserve squad, is scheduled to have. surgery soon, but most likely will not walk - or play golf-- again, his moth- er, Karen, said. "He's my son, but he's also my best friend, and this is the most God-awful thing that's ever happened to me, she said. After approximately three weeks of rehabilitation, Baribeau will be released from Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital in Milwaukee, Wis., and will come to Ann Arbor for further therapy at the University of Michigan hospital. Her son's prognosis is grim, but "I'm sure that won't make a difference" in his personality, Karen Baribeau said. Baribeau is scheduled to have surgery -"to realign his spinal cord, but the surgery has been delayed by a slight case of pneumonia, she said. Baribeau was on a boat with friends from his high school in Grand Haven and one friend's parents when the accident occurred. The group was on its way to a Jimmy Buffett concert in East Troy, Wis. Michigan golf coach Jim Carras said he is planning to visit Baribeau as soon as Baribeau is in a good enough condi- tion to receive visitors. "He wanted in the worst way to attend Michiganandplay golf at Michigan. He's a hard worker and and excellent student," Carras said. "This is one of those very nice people who these things shouldn't happen to," Carras added. Karen said her own mother became seriously ill when she was a child, and at the time she thought that was the worst thing that would ever happen to her. "'All I can do is take one step at a time," Karen said. -This report was originally published as a Daily Online news update. Nebraska-Omaha joins CCHA OMAHA Continued from Page 14 quick and painless. "They're one of the few teams in the league actually making money," Pearson said. "They're drawing well and the program is healthy and stable. "There's no reason for that to change. There's not that much else to do in Omaha. The CCHA was not Nebraska- Omaha's first choice. Compared to the WCHA, the CCHA makes little sense for the team from a geographical stand- point. Travel will be difficult for some schools, especially the ones in Michigan's upper peninsula. But the WCHA put a moratorium on expansion earlier this year, saying it was not interested in any new teams. The CCHA took a different approach, and the conference still might not be done. "The CCHA has always been a pro- gressive group," Pearson said. "There may even be more expansion. The con- ference has to decide how many teams it wants." Niagara has already shown interest and made a presentation to the CCH& and Pearson said Oakland and WayU State may be going varsity soon. The immediate concern for the Mavericks is whether or not they'll be able to compete in the CCHA. Last sea- son, the Mavericks put together a 12- 18-3 record playing a schedule against mostly independent teams andsome affiliated ones, including NCAA- Tournament qualifier Princeton. "It's a decent record for their fi- year varsity," Pearson said. "I think thW have a chance to be middle of the pack." Against affiliated teams, the Mavericks only victory came in a 4-3 victory over Maine.
