WARREN ZINN/Daily Van Ryn is latest Devils' advocate M' defenseman is first collegian taken; Koch, Kosick also get calls yRlck Freeman ily Sports Editor ichigan defenseman Mike Van Ryn may not have been the pick in Saturday's NHL entry draft, but he was the first ollege player taken when the New Jersey Devils took him 6th overall. Michigan's Geoff Koch was taken by Nashville in the sec- nd round, and Mark Kosick, who scored two goals in the 998 NCAA Championship game, was taken yesterday by the arolina Hurricanes. Michigan products have done well for the Devils. Brendan orrison, a 1996 grad and the Hobey Baker award-winner that ear, just completed a successful season in the Devils organi- n, including several NHL games. inger Geoff Koch couldn't have been taken solely on the trength of previous Michigan players in Nashville - The redators didn't even exist when Koch started playing at ichigan this season. Even though the first collegian wasn't taken until late in the irst round, the draft tied up much of the available college tai- nt in the nation. Unlike in basketball, NHL draftees rarely ave their college teams to play in the NHL club's organiza- 'on. Michigan coach Red Berenson, in particular, frowns upon layers leaving college without their degrees. Berenson gradu- ted from Michigan before playing in the NHL. 4n Ryn is on a fishing trip, and will not retumn to his ondon, Ont. home until sometime next week. Koch and osick were also unavailable for comment. NOTEBOOK: Former Michigan players currently in the NHL s well as other NHL-ers took part in the third annual NHL & elebrity All Star game yesterday at Joe Louis Arena. The irst goal for the North American team was scored by former Vichigan goalie Steve Shields, who currently plays for San ose. Shields took the opportunity to play forward and took a pass from former Wolverine and current Red Wing Mike Knuble * found twine on the short side. Berenson provided the sec- ondary assist and wowed announcers, who noted that the crafty Berenson always seemed to be on the ice when the North Americans scored. Unfortunately for Berenson, the World team prevailed over his North Americans, 12-10. Shields notched two goals in the losing effort. MRGtAsaREMYERS/Daily Geoff Koch was drafted in the second round of Saturday's NHL draft by the Nashville Predators with the 85th pick. ~ On Tap Three Michigan hockey players were selected in this year's NHL Entry Draft.
