Robert Fox, director of the Intramural
Sports Building, said property loss is
not a significant problem in the intra-
mural building, which had nearly
500,000 visitors last year.
"It's not a problem per se, but if
you're the person who had a watch
stolen - it's a problem, Fox said.
Alan Levy, director of housing ,
public affairs, said 215 larcenies were

committed this past academic year,
which is a relatively small percentage
when figured in with the 9,400 resi-
dents. However, Levy added that 215
larcenies is 215 too many.
Heatley said DPS should receive
the money within the next few weeks
and should put it to use by mid-June.
He said DPS will then analyze the
buildings on campus to decide which
ones need the most attention.
Fox said the intramural building
should not need any additional secu-
rity.
"I don't think there's a drastic
need for it by any means," Fox said.

"Not anybody can walk in off the
streets."
Heatley said as part of the criteria
to receive the federal grant, the pro-
gram will hire a "non-sworn" officer
who will oversee much of the build-
ing watch program, act as a program
speaker and make reports.
Heatley said that after this coming
academic year, DPS will evaluate
what improvements or setbacks the
enhanced initiative has made on curb-
ing property loss on campus.
"I'm very optimistic," Heatley
said. "I believe this will be a success-
ful program."
