2 -The Michigan Daily - Wednesday, May 7, 1997 TUITION Continued from Page 1 ly votes on tuition fees in July. Regent Olivia Maynard (D-Flint) said she believes the regents would support a milder increase if it comes to the board. "I think it's really important," Maynard said. "The fact that tuition con- tinually increases is a hardship, so you have to make tough choices. I think (Bollinger's) commitment to keep tuition low is very important. I think he will get commitment from all the regents in that regard." Bollinger has not proposed an exten- sive tuition plan similar to the one Michigan State University President Peter McPherson has had in pmactice for the past three years. Terry Denbow, vice president for uni- versity relations at MSU said McPherson began a tuition guarantee that ensures tuition prices at MSU will not increase over the rate of inflation. The plan will continue through MSU's class of 2001. "It's addressing the need for stu- dents and families to plan," Denbow said. "Quality education must be affordable. We see that tuition restraint and quality are not incom- patible. Indeed, we find they go hand in hand." The Detroit News claimed Mott bas- ketball coach Steve Schmidt purposeful- ly withheld the information from University officials in an effort to save Harvey's basketball career. The newspaper also stated that Schmidt met with Genesee County Prosecutor Arthur Busch to win some leniency for Harvey. However, Schmidt, in a conversation with The Michigan Daily, said that many of his comments had been misconstrued or taken out of context, and refused to to the distrbuton or compiimentar tickets. University ticket records show that Martin was often seated near recruits at games. An unsigned note on the ticket records for a game in 1994 states the then-recruit Willie Mitchell was to be seatedbetween Martin and Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer's son, which may be a violation because at the time both Martin and Archer were considered part of the University's athletic program. As a result of the allegations, the University has hired a law firm that spe- cializes in NCAA infractions and com- pliance to investigate the claims. - Daily News Editor Heather Kamins contributed torhisrepo The Michigan Daily (ISSN 0745-967) is published Wednesdays during the spring and summer terms by stu- dents at the University of Michigan.
