Michigan athletes seek success in Sicily Wednesday, August 13, 1997 - The Michigan Daily -1 By Chris Farah Daily Sports Editor Eight Wolverines will travel abroad during the end of August to represent their countries in an international com- petition. The World University Games draw some of the best college athletes of the world. The goal of the games? To exhibit hard work and dedication, win- ning honor and fame for Michigan as well aa their home nations. And the trip to Sicily, Italy, might not be so bad either. "I'm hoping to see a bit of the island," said John Mortimer, a member of the Michigan track team who is running in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. "I have 10 days before I actually have to compete, so it'll be nice to do some sight-seeing and watch some of the other sports." Joining Mortimer from the Michigan track program are two representatives of the women's team, high jumper Nicole Forrester and long jumper Tania Longe. Mortimer will represent the United States, while Forrester and Longe com- pete under other flags - Forrester for Canada and Longe for Norway. The Michigan swimming teams and men's gymnastics team will also be sending Wolverines to the games. Swimmers representing the United States include junior Jennie Eberwein and freshman Scott Werner. The position has really changed. Som imes even coaches - the ones who should enforce the roles - get out of hand, like former Michigan football coach Gary Moeller who was dismissed after a drunken tirade in 1995. Add to all these responsibilities the overall promotion of Michigan athletics,, including the improvement of the athlet- ic campus and facilities. And Nike still looms over the department. Besides financial and marketing mat- ters, the most important thing an athlet- ic director has to do is damage control. Often, he orshe is ababysiner, watching over naughty children driving expensive cars or breaking windows in bars. Hypothetically speaking, of course. The NCAA has a requirement that its members maintain institutional control - the very item for which a Kansas law firm is investigating Michigan. But most of these concerns - allega- tions, gender equity issues, athletes and coaches acting under the influence of mind-altering substances - were not even issues during the previous 90 years. These issues are now the foremost concern for an athletic director, howev- er. Bollinger cannot make the mistake Duderstadt did in hiring only business- men or -women to run a sports program. A president should select someone who will not tolerate anyone in the depart- ment getting out of control.
