Wednesday, June 18;1997 - The Michigan Daily - 7 CIRCUS Continued from Page 1 we've ever had, at least in my memory." Thousands of people lined the streets, the small- est sitting on the curb, while others picnicked on the grass. Children and parents eagerly awaited the passing of animals, pipe organs and circus per- formers. Gage said that, although the past 12 circus weekends have successfully raised money for var- ious campaigns, this year will mark the end of the circus as a fundraiser. "We're moving on to some different fundraising activities," Gage said. "The circus has been a really good activity for us, we just think it's time to move on to something new." Many Ann Arbor residents were disappointed to learn that this would be the last year of the circus weekend. "I'm sorry to hear that this may be the last year of sponsorship," Ann Arbor resident Kathy Rinehart said. "It's been so much fun for the kids." Seven-year-old Ben Rolston enjoyed the parade, grams with the proceeds. "We did a couple of different face-painting things," Gage said. "The kids always love it. It's always been a great feature." . Kids of all ages sat down in front of clowns who painted their cheeks with pictures ranging from simple hearts to intricate animals. Four-year-old Jenna McKahn enjoyed the kalei- doscopic colors of the clowns' palettes. "Rainbows are pretty, don't you know?" McKahn said, referring to a painting on her cheek. The private circus gala on Thursday included a performance for benefactors of the campaign who purchased tickets in advance to help raise money for women's health. "We raised money through corporate sponsors," Gage said. "There's a list of 33 corporate sponsors that give us money to support the cause. Part of that pays for the parade and part goes to the hospi- tal." Overall, the three events of the circus weekend were successful. "Every event was very well-attended and i think everybody had a good time." Gage said. A SPECIAL UFr-We're looking tor nesa- thy women between the ages 21-35 for egg donation.
