The ballots are in. All the votes have been
counted. We have the winners. The 1995-96
University of Michigan Male and Female Student
Athletes of the Year are junior swimmer and
NCAA national champion Tom Dolan and sopho-
more All-American softball pitcher and utility
player Sara Griffin.
Dolan worked hard to earn this prestigious title.
He overcame chronic fatigue and exhaustion to
qualify for the United States swimming team in
the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Ga.
Having qualified for three individual Olympic
events at the early March U.S. Olympic Trials,
Dolan will swim the 200-meter individual medley,
the 400-meter individual medley and the 400-
meter freestyle at the Games.
At the Trials, Dolan earned the Performance-of-
the-Meet award after coming close to breaking his
own 400-meter individual medley world -record.
Dolan is internationally ranked No. 1 in each of
the three events in which he will compete at the
Olympics.
But the Olympics were not Dolan's sole con-
cern. Remembering his commitment to the
Wolverines, Dolan competed at the NCAA
National Swimming and Diving Championships
and became the first man since Matt Biondi
(1986-87) to repeat as a triple individual event
winner at the NCAA meet.
Dolan won the 500 freestyle, the 1650 freestyle
and the 400 individual medley. In addition, he
anchored Michigan's winning 800 freestyle relay
team (6:20.89) which broke the 12-year-old
American record as well as the U.S. Open and
NCAA records in the event.

of the year
Dolan came away from the NCAA
Championships with six All-American citations
and tied for the NCAA High Point Award with a
perfect 60, just as he had last season.
In addition to competing, Dolan is a spokesper-
son for the American Lung Association and works
with asthmatic children. He himself suffers with
exercise-induced asthma and a restricted wind-
pipe.
Griffin, a pitcher and utility player, also has a
host of achievements. She started as both a pitsi
er and designated player for the 51-14 Big1&
Conference and NCAA Regional champion
Wolverines. Griffin was named the Big Ten
Softball Player of the Year and was selected First-
Team All-Big Ten for the second consecutive sea-
son.
During the 1995-96 season, Griffin was select-
ed conference Pitcher of the Week twice. She also
earned her second straight First-Team All-
America (utility) and First-Team All-Great Lakes
Region designations from the National Softb
Coaches Association. This made her the only
Michigan softball player to be twice named to the
national first-team.
Griffin's key role in Michigan's Big Ten regular-
season title-clinching victories over Minnesota
May 4-5 earned the sophomore her second career
NSCA National Player-of-the-Week award.
This season, Griffin compiled a 35-7 record
with 184 strikeouts over 266.1 innings of work, all
single-season Michigan softball records. She
tossed a pair of no-hitters and recorded only t
second perfect game in Wolverine softball histo.
Griffin led all the Michigan hitters with a .408
average. Her .420 career batting average is a
Michigan career best.

CORRECTION:
In the June 5 edition of The
Michigan Daily, there was an article
published about NCAA violations by*
the Michigan State football program.
The article stated that Michigan
State had forfeited its 28-26 victory
over Michigan Nov. 4 at East
Lansing as a result of penalties
handed out after an internal investi-
gation.
This statenient was incorrect,
Tbe Spartans forfeited their sis wins
from the 1994 season but none of
their seven wins in 1995. In fact, *
the Wolverines beat Michigan State
1994, winning 40-20. Michigan,
therefore, is unaffected by the penal-
ties and does not gain any victories
as a result.
We would like to apologize to all
parties associated with this article
--the Michigan State football pro
gram, the Michigan football pr o
gram, and NCAA administrative offi-
cilIs - as well as to any readers for
whom these errors may have been
an incorvenience.
