SPORTS Wednesday, May 15, 1996 - The Michigan Daily - 15 [ track teams ready for Big Tens j. By Eugene Bowen and Chris Farah Daily Sports Writers Those fighting for gender equality would have done well to use the Michigan men's and women's track team performance at the unscored Bronco Invitational at Kalamazoo as a prime example. Both teams were equally sub- par. Junior Neil Gardner was the only Wolverine - from the men's or women's teams - to win an event; he scorched his competition in the 110-meter hurdles. A few second-place winners came from the crop as well: senior Felman Malveaux (100-meter dash), freshman Jared Lewis (400 meters) and fresh- man Angie Stanifer (800 meters). Yet overall, the Michigan teams weren't up to snuff. With the outdoor Big Ten Championships coming up this weekend and the NCAA Championships the fol- lowing week, the Wolverines have no time to lament last week's indecent showing. But if the men and women har- riers think anything like junior Edzra Gibson, it's doubtful they would be lamenting even if they did have time. "We weren't too concerned about the Bronco,' he said. "We always take our performance seriously, but with the weather we had and the Big Tens coming up, we really just went to run." If any lackluster moment remains stuck in their minds, it most certainly would be February's indoor Big Tens, where the women earned a bronze medal-esque third place while the men earned apoor sixth. Not results the teams - especially the men - want to repeat. "I was embarrassed by how we per- formed in the indoor Big Tens," senior Trinity Townsend said. "Hopefully, we'll do much better than we did then." Senior high jumper Monika Black and sophomore heptathlete Tania Longe, who will also compete in the 100-meter hur- dles and the long and triple jumps should lead the Wolverines. For the men, Townsend - who runs the 800 meters and the 4x400-meter relay - anji Gardner are the ones to watch. Longe, already an NCAA qualifier, said she hopes the teams stays focused. "I altvays just try to do my best," she said. "The Big Tens are going to be tough. But as long as we stay mentally tough and just hang in there, we'll do well." The weak link will be the long-dis- tance events, due to Kevin Sullivan's and Scott MacDonald's absences from the meet to prepare for Canada's Olympic trials. Kevin Bowman, long-jumper and 100- meter runner, said he wants to get a feel for his Big Ten opponents. "I'm looking to get some experience and see what the competition's going to be like for the next few years," Bowman said. For Lewis, who will run the 400- meter, it's one thought and one thought only. "It's 47 seconds or bust." The Michigan men's track team will miss Scott McDonald - currently training for the Canadian Olympic trials - at this weekend's Big Ten Championships. Blue golfers share fourth at conference tournament From Staff Reports The Michigan men's golf team tied for fourth place in the Big Ten Championships last weekend at State College. Mirroring the weather, Michigan's scores got progressively worse, with Sunday's final-round total of 313 drop- ping the Wolverines into a tie with Minnesota. Junior Brent Idalski was Michigan's highest finisher, tying for ninth place with a four-round total of 297. The Wolverines' total of 1195 was 22 shots off the Buckeye pace. Ohio State held off Wisconsin to suc- cessfully defend its conference crown. Indiana finished third, one stroke ahead of the Gophers and Wolverines.
