Van Cliburn performs at Hill,
receives new UMS award
By Greg Parker
e University Musical Society
SUMS), in conjunction with Ford Motor
Company, presented virtuoso pianist Van
Cliburn with the first UMS
Distinguished Artist Award last Saturday.
Along with the awards ceremony,
where a video montage of Cliburn's life
was presented, Cliburn performed vari-
ous works of Brahms, Debussy and
Beethoven at Hill Auditorium.
Cliburn earned international fame in
1958 when he won the First
International Tchaikovsky Piano
Competition in the former Soviet
Union. Upon returning home from the
competition, Cliburn was lavished with
a ticker-tape parade in New York City.
Since then, he has been an internation-
al star, transcending even the Cold War.
Hailing from Texas, Cliburn has tes-
tified that he always loved performing
in Ann Arbor. This is much of the rea-
son Cliburn was selected for the award.
"He made it clear - he loved Ann
Arbor, and he wanted to come back;"
said Kenneth Fischer, UMS executive
director. This was the ninth perfor-
mance for Cliburn at Hill.
In addition, Cliburn has "the power
behind his music to bring people and
entire nations together," Fischer said.
UMS was "launching a new tradi-
tion" with the Distinguished Artist
Award, Fischer said. It will be present-
ed annually "to recognize an interna-
tionally acclaimed artist who has a
making his Ann Arbor appearance
quite an event. While Cliburn was
scheduled to perform for only an hour,
this did not seem to disappoint the
4,000 ticket holders. Fischer said that
Cliburn's "performance was terrific -
he gave 150 percent"
The awards ceremony also had a
local connection. The music for
Cliburn's biographical video montage
was a derivation of Ann Arborite David
Barrett's "One Shining Moment,"
which gained notoriety as the theme
music for the NCAA Championship
post-game highlight show. Barrett
composed the theme specifically for
the Cliburn video.
In addition, Ann Arbor pianist
Christopher Taylor performed three
pieces written by another Ann Arbor
native, William Balcom. "These gifts
were more than the UMS award - it
was the gift of music from the people in
Ann Arbor who are world class musi-
cians," said Fischer.

In addition to kicking off the annual
Distinguished Artist Award, the
Cliburn recital and award ceremony
also was a fund raiser for the UMS
Education Program. The Education
Program has been around since the
1989/90 season, and has treated thou-
sands of adults and children in dozens
of school districts to various free musi-
cal performances. Different ticket
packages were available for the
evening, rangeing in price from $25 to
$10,000 and promising a significant
revenue for the Education Program.
Cliburn used to perform up to 100
concerts a year, but recently his perfor-
mances have been much less regular,
Taxi Driver comes to the State Theates
Ready for an Oscar-nominated, Cannes-winning, 20-year vintage piece of cinema
with the buzz phrase "You talkin' to me?" You need look no further than the Michigan
Theater, which happens to be showing a newly-made print of Martin Scorsese's "Taxi
Driver" Friday through next Wednesday. It's the story of Travis Sickle (Robert De
Niro), a New York cabbie with a twisted sense of Justice and a bunch of guns. With
a scrum of supporting actors who went on to be huge (Cybil Shepherd, Harvey Keitel
and Jodie Foster, among others), a fine score by the legendary Bernard Herrmann
and an intriguing story that takes the viewer through an intimidatingly gritty world,
