Winters leading the way.
Sophomore cornerback Charles
Woodson looks set to provide strong
support keeping opposing receivers
at bay.
Thompson said the speed and cov-
erage skills of Woodson will allow
the secondary many options.
"We can play zone on one side and
let him play (man-to-man) on the
other side," Thompson said. "It's a
big bonus to have Charles out there."
Irons said what the offense does on
the field is not a worry for the
defense.
"If we do our job, everything else
will come into place."

Denson played mostly a reserve
role last year after making the move
from defensive tackle at the begin-
ning of last season. He split time
with Zach Adami, who is expected to
start in the left guard spot.
Jansen has made the move to
offensive line from tight end.
Carr will also look closely at
freshmen tackles Jeff Backus and
Paul Tannous.
Backus was named to USA
Today's All-USA first team last sea-
son at Norcross High in Georgia.
And Michigan hopes everything
will be in place when it opens the
season Aug. 31 against Illinois in
Michigan Stadium.
