The former Wolverine grabbed his second medal of the Games on Monday night by finishing third in the 100-meter freestyle competition. Borges earned his first medal, a sil- ver, in Saturday night's 50-meter freestyle race. Borges' performance in the 100 did not quite equal his showing at the 1992 Barcelona Games. The Brazilian claimed a silver medal in the event th year. Michigan's John Piersma is one swimmer who has not quite been up.to the standard set by current and former Wolverines in Atlanta. So far, the sophomore has compet- ed in both the 100-meter and 400- meter freestyle events, but has failed to qualify for the finals in either competition. Piersma and Dolan were stror@ early in yesterday's preliminary heats, with Piersma leading at the the first turn, but both faded during the sixth lap. New head coach Marcia Pankratz and new assistant coach Tracey Fuchs will have stories to tell about playing in the Olympics. Both coaches are members of the U.nited States women's field hockey team and both contributed to its 3-2 victory over South Korea Monday at the Olympic Games in Atlanta. Pankratz scored one goal while Fuchs scored onceiand setaupthe Americans' game-winning goal, which occurred on the last hit of the match. With six seconds to go, Fuchs set up a shot from a short corner and Barb Marois drilled the shot into the left cor- ner of the net. With the victory, the U.S. team improved to 1-0-1, which includes a I- I tie with Netherlands on Saturday. In that game, Pancratz scored the tyin goal off a penalty corner in the fir two minutes. Counting last night's game against Great Britain, the U.S. squad has four more games before medal play begins Aug. 1. WASHINGTON TO PLAY TODAY Michigan graduate Malivai Washington makes his Olympic debut today. Washington, who made it to tj finals before losing to Richard Kraicg at Wimbledon, has his preliminary match against Slovakia's Jan Kroslak. The Swartz Creek nativesis seeded fourth and will play in both singles and doubles competition. His doubles part- ner will be Richie Reneberg.
