Besides, everyone thought that Anfernee Hardaway would easily throw y-oop passes for rim-rattling dunks Shaquille O'Neal. Charles Barkley was going to back his way in to the bas- ket and dominate on the boards. Grant Hill would glide by opponents, wowing he hometown crowd. Reggie Miller would take advantage of closer 3-point ine. That's why games aren't won or hlayed on paper. Sure, Dream Team Ill won, 96-90 - but the USA Select team was up by 17 se half. The 12-man squad heading to a t week's Olympics in Atlanta, repre- enting the best players in the NBA - a an where O'Neal, Hakeem Olajuwon nd David Robinson could be on the ourt at the same time--didn't put on a show. In fact, it was a Michigan player who made the highlight play of the game. Wolverine junior forward Maurice f or made the play that sent the 54-strong crowd rocking. Offa jump shot from the left baseline, Taylor went skyward to slam in the one- handed rebound with authority. The play had both benches' teammates looking at each other in disbelief. Taylor and his point guard teammate, Louis Bullock, were two of 16 players an the USA Select squad. Taylor, who pulled his hamstring at he first team practice, entered the game minutes into the contest to a rous- t ovation from the hometown crowd. Taylor's job: guard Barkley, then try to score against Robinson and Karl Malone. In 17 minutes of play, Taylor finished the game with six points on three-for-eight shooting, three rebounds and three fouls. "It was really physical in the paint," Taylor said. "Both (Barkley and alone) are physically gifted. They playing me like they were playing in the NBA season. They were pushing me around and going up strong." In nine minutes of action, Bullock had eight points, includ- ing four from the charity stripe. But even nine minutes meant a lot to him. "It's just like a dream;" Bullock said. "That's why they call it the Dream Team. A lot of people dream about playing against (the Dream Team) or being like them. For me this week, it probably has been the best experience of my life.' As for the NBA stars on the Dream Team, the trio of Pippen, Olajuwon and Payton was a defensive nuisance. Payton showed why people call him "The Glove," with two steals and constant pressure in the comeback effort. Pippen led the squad with 17 points. Olajuwon came off the bench to score 16. The pros were impressed with the effort and performance of the collegiate squad. "They all came out and played real well," Hill said. "They were the aggres- sors out there, not us.'
