By Anita Chik Daily Staff Reporter The hot days of summer have arrived, and the Ann Arbor Transportation Authority has announced that it will be offering free bus rides on days that are designated by the Clean Air Coalition of Southeast Michigan as "Ozone Action Days." "Public transportation is one of the solutions to help reduce emission dur- ing Ozone Action day," said Liz Nowland-Margolis, manager of com- munity relations at Ann Arbor Transportation Authority. "Less cars on the road with more people taking the bus will cut down on the hydrocarbon emission. The Ozone Action campaign is spon- sored by a number of public andprivate organizations in the state, under the umbrella of the Clean Air Coalition of Southeast Michigan. Chuck Hersey, technical manager of the Southeast Michigan Council of Government's environmental program, said an excessive ozone level forms when the temperature gets relatively high and the sky is clear with no wind. He said many people share the misun- derstanding that industries are the major cause of air pollution. "We travel more than 110 miles a day' Hersey said. "If we add it up to all things we do, that will make a serious pollution." According to documents published by the American Public Transit Association, people can help reduce about 90 percent of hydrocarbon emis- sions and 75 percent of carbon monox- de if they choose to take public trans- portation rather than drive their own cars. Nowland-Margolis said AATA will provide information cards on buses to inform passengers about how they can help reduce their energy consumption and keep the air clean. She said the fare boxes would be covered on days that are designated as Ozone Action days so that passengers can ride the bus free of charge. rso l BOXING: UM Boxing Club open for sum- mer at the coliseum at 5th & Hill.
