NEWS Wednesday, July 10, 1996 - The-Michigan Daily - 3 Local American Cancer Society receives $7,000 in pennies * Cancer society seek- ing volunteers to help sort through donation By Brian Campbell Daily Staff Reponter The Washtenaw County Chapter of the American Cancer Society (ACS) is seeking volunteers to unload and sort $7,000 worth of pennies. Presently, the pennies, which would span 8.5 miles if placed end to end, lie clut- tered in several boxes in a storage truck. From July 15-17, the ACS members, along with anyone willing to join them, will be sifting through the heaps of coins at Saint Francis Catholic Church. "We usually assist in local patient services and the ACS national research program, but a significant portion of this donation will go toward local patient services, said Belinda Mathie, spokesperson for the Washtenaw ACS. Mathie said she wasn't sure about the origin of the peculiar donation, but said she presumed the pennies were a gift from a former ACS employee currently working for Reader's Digest, a compa- ny that uses pennies for customer mail- ing campaigns. Once collected 4nd deposited, most of the money will be used for transport- ing patients to and from hospitals, pro- viding them with crutches and wheel- chairs, organizing support groups and maintaining a "wig bank" for patients involved in chemotherapy. The ACS is hoping for a significant turnout next week. When asked what would be done if some of the pennies remained unloaded, Mathie said, "Oh, we'll get them all anyway, but it will be a slow process in the office." The ACS project is called "Pennies From Heaven" and will last from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. each day at Saint Francis Church, located on 2250 East Stadium Blvd. Free food and beverages will be offered.
