Wednesday, June 7, 1995 - The Michigan Daily -7 Study: Drug use causes permanent changes By Jessica Mass Daily Staff Reporter A high percentage of college students using il- licit drugs, including marijuana, heroin and cocaine, signals the possibility of high rates of addiction among college students. A new study by Kent C. Berridge and Terry E. obinson, two University researchers, found that drug addiction causes permanent changes in the neurosystems of the brain and that addicts may crave drugseventhough the drugsdonotgive thempleasure. Additionally, the study establishes a difference between the neural processes of wanting and liking. "Most people assume that addicts take drugs ei- ther to get pleasure or to avoid unpleasant conse- quences of withdrawal," Berridge said. "But the truth is that addicts continue to seek drugs even when they don't derive any pleasure from them, and relapse is a potent danger long after detoxification and recovery from withdrawal." Thestudy foundthat whenaddictive drugssuchas heroin, cocaine and amphetamines are taken repeat- edly, specific brain regions become more sensitized. "Addiction can be triggered by anything paired with the drug in the past," Berridge said. "When these things are present, they can put a person into extreme craving even if they've already gone through withdrawal." Berridge said this theory of addiction can also ap- ply to alcohol and, to some extent, to nicotine. The study also identifies what would be needed to make a chemical cure for addiction. "The drug would have to reverse neural changes that cause su- illicit drugs, making addictiona problem that many per-excitability," Berridge said. college students confront.
