14 -The Michigan Daily - Wednesday, May 24, 1995 Michigan men finish By Monica Porakov Daily Sports Writer The Michigan men's track and field team did just what it wanted. This week- end, at the Big Ten Championships in Minneapolis, the Wolverines finished sec- ond, only 11.5 points behind champion Wisconsin. "We were happy to get second," Michigan coach Jack Harvey said. Neil Gardner agreed. "Michigan did remarkably well - very few mishaps," Gardner said. All-American Kevin Sullivan took two victories, one in the 800-meter and one in the 1500. Scott MacDonald and Nick Karfonta also added points to Michigan's overall score of 112.5. MacDonald placed fifth in the 800 and fourth in the 1500 and Karfonta finished eighth in the 1500. The Wolverines also had a strong fin- ish in hurdles. Gardner and Tyrone Wheatley battled it out for first and second place in the110 with Gardner winning the title. Wheatley finished second in the100 dash (10.53), an event that he never com- peted in this season, and Gardner finished second in the 400 hurdles (50.81). However, it was distance runner Shawn McKay who made the difference for the Michigan. He surpassed all expec- tations when he placed second in the 10,000. "McKay pulledthrough in the 10,000- meters." Gardner said. "He never scored before so it upset a lot of schools. Every- thing clicked from there." Gardner was also happy with his own 2nd at Big performance. "God was good to me this year and helped me stay healthy," Gardner said. "It was through him that I did well." Michigan will now wait for Satur- day to find out who will qualify for the NCAAs. Sullivan, Gardner and Wheatley are expected to qualify. Trinity Townsend and Ian Forsyth may join them. Women's track: The Michigan women's track and field team was disappointed this week- end. The Wolverines finished fifth at the Big Ten Championships in Minneapo- lis with 67.5 points. The winner of the event was Illinois with Wisconsin, Minnesota and Purdue following, re- spectively. "We did not perform where we wanted to," Michigan coach James Henry said. "Our first goal was to be in the top three. Our second was to be in the uppper division (top 5), so we got out second goal" Ten meet The weekend did have some great per- formances. Tania Longe won the long jump with a 20 feet 2 1/2inch finish. She also finished second in the heptathlon, breaking an 11-year-old Michigan record and scoring an NCAA provisional 5,429 points. "It feltgreat winning (thelong jump)," Longe said. "I just got done with the heptathlon and open hurdles, and was go- ing to try to do my best in this event. I felt good, not too tired." Michigan also saw great finishes from Beth Gould, who took third in the heptathlon with 4,723 points and Jen Peterson, who finished seventh with 4,173 points. Senior All-American Karen Harvey, who was competing for the lasttime in the Big Ten Championships, also helped out Michigan by placing third in the 1500 and second in the 3000.
