"We need to put some things to rest." At least Carr can take solace in his- tory. That's Welsh's problem. Ann Arbor has not been kind to the Virginia coach. He has taken many teams to Michigan, only to send them home with sore behinds. "Back then, (the Wolverines) spanked us pretty - good," Welsh said. When Welsh was at Navy, he visited Michigan Stadium seven times and never won. His Midshipmen were outscored 252 to 44 in those games and were shutout in three. The Cavalier team he took over in 1982 has been even less successful against the Wolverines. Virginia has never scored a point on Michigan, losing its only two meetings with the maize and blue, 38-0, in 1899 and, 56-0, in 1971. Times have changed, however. "I've never brought this good of ateam to Ann Arbor," Welsh said. "We have a lot of alent and we're excited to play Michi- gan." In addition to his premier defense, Welsh returns running back Kevin Brooks who scampered for 741 yards and eight touchdowns last season. Quar- terback Mike Groh was 138 for 216 in 1994, with 1711 yards and 13 touch- down passes. In total, eight starters return on of- fense and seven on defense for Virginia. Welsh also has an intangible in his hand. Aug. 26 is his birthday, and no present would be better than beating the Wolverines, he said. "We should give (Michigan) a good game," Welsh said. "Hopefully for me, history will not repeat itself." Virginia was 9-3 in 1994 and fin- ished third in the ACC behind Florida State and Duke. The Cavaliers defeated Texas Christian, 20-10, in the Indepen- dence Bowl and finished 13th in the USA Today/CNN coaches poll and 15th in the final Associated Press poll. Michi- gan ended up third in the Big Ten last season after Penn State and Ohio State and was ranked 13th by the AP. 0 wn the Cavaliers Aug. 26 during the Pigskin Classic at Michigan get off to a good start under new head coach Uoyd Carr.
