Don't flush your fish, Sell them.in Daily Classifieds.0 0°0 000 0 6, 1995 - The Michigan Daily -7 Assembly, Big Ten meet for conference By Deborah G. Weinstein Daily Staff Reporter For three days the Michigan Student Assembly expanded its audience as well as its influence by attending the Associa- tion of Big Ten Schools conference last week. MSA President Flint Wainess, Vice President Sam Goodstein and External Relations Chair Fiona Rose were part of the six-person delegation that went to the conference, which was held in Illi- nois- Before the conference, Rose said that one advantage of attending was that it would provide a wider perspective. "(We will)see how we fit with the Big Ten,"she said. Wainess said that the conference was reassuring. "It gave me confidence ... to see how advanced the University and MSA is," he said. Wainess cited the MSA fee structure as an indication of the student government's strength. "A lot of schools (are) struggling to compile (a magazine) like Advice," he said. Members said that the conference was an exercise in MSA leadership. "The Michigan delegation was the sole author of the AmeriCorps resolution, which passed," Wainess said. The resolution urges the continuation of President Clinton's domestic Peace- Corps-style program. "The House voted to kill (AmeriCorps)in '96, so we're concentrat- ing on the Senate," WaiAess said. MSA also wrote a resolution in sup- port of the In-School Interest Subsidy, which, like AmeriCorps, is alsothreatened by budget cuts. The interest subsidy helps bothunder- graduate and graduate students pay their loans by having the government pay the interest that accumulates while thestudent is in school. The University participates in the Di- rect Student Loan program, for which the Michigan delegation co-wrote a resolu- tion. This resolution supports a program which makes the University -instead of a bank- responsible for collecting stu- dent loans. "It's been incredibly successful," Wainess said. Goodstein said that one advantage of attending the conference was that it per- mitted the University tobe part of a lobby- ing block. Goodstein also said that the overall format could have been improved. "I would like to see ABTS be more flexible on the topics it will share information on," he said. Despite his criticism, Goodstein said the conference was a success. "These reso- lutions aren't going to change the world, but it helps."
