Pre-college programs prepare students for education

By Deborah 6. Weinstein
Daily Staff Reporter
High school seniors aren't the only
ones pondering the meaning of college
or their impending future.
The University is participating in a
statewide program that brings almost
2,000 high school students to university
campuses throughout the state of Michi-
Interim pre-college coordinator Onis
Cheathams said the programs are meant
to generate and sustain interest in sec-
ondary education. "We take alot of en-
ergy and time to keep in contact (with
participants) and as many doors open for

them," she said.
One of the programs is the King/
Chavez/Parks Career Exploration Pro-
gram. KCP is a career-oriented program
that focuses on a particular career each
week and provides workshops about that
specific field. Field-related activities,
such as a mock trial during the law semi-
nar, are part of the programming.
In addition to addressing career de-
mands and University admission re-
quirements, Multicultural Events Coor-
dinator Nicole Johnson said that KCP
tries to help students feel in control.
"(KCP) gives them steps they can take to
reach their goals," she said.

The program goes beyond informing
students about standardized test scores
and a career's academic requirements.
KCP also tries to address social issues
such as peer pressure and self image,
which may be obstacles to enrolling in
college or pursuing a career.
Resident counselor Akomea Poku-
KanKam described the part of the pro-
gram called "The Game of Life."
"(It is about) how racial, economic
and gender stereotypes could be ob-
stacles to success and how to overcome
(them)," he said.
Johnson said a quiz-bowl style pro-
gram complements the game.

"Students break into teams and dis-
cuss questions about history, literature...
famous people. It is multicultural-based
so the scholars can see that people in
other minority groups have succeeded
despite their history," Johnson said.
Darius Cobb, a senior at Cass-Tech-
nical High School, has been in the KCP
program for three years. "It's a nice way
to start friendships and to learn some-
thing, learn something really worth-
while," he said.
Similar to KCP in its academic focus is
the Wade H. McCree JrtIncentive Scholar-
ship Program. ISP differs from KCP in its
duration and admission requirements.

Cheathams said that to be in the program,
students must be nominated by a principal
or counselor in eighth grade.
Students start the program in the
ninth grade and are active throughout the
academic year and summer. If students
maintain a grade point of 3.0 or better
and earn an ACT score of 21 or higher,
they receive a tuition scholarship.
Cheathams said the program is a suc-
cess. "I currently have 100 ISP scholars
who have gone through the program and
are U-M students."
Cobb said thatsthe program's value is
immeasurable. "Now I know nothing's
impossible."
