Wednesday, July 12, 1995 - The Michigan Daily - 7 Mcard will not be required for returning students y Steve Seepersaud aily Staff Reporter By September, all University stu- ent identification cards will be printed with the name Mcard. But while first- year newcomers are required to hold the new "smart" card, the new technology will not be mandatory for returning stu- dents. Anyone obtaining a new or replace- ent card this fall will automatically re- ceive an Mcard. The smart card will have a chip capable of storing a cash value, like Entree Plus, and a magnetic stripe linked to a First of America checking ac- count. However, it will not be mandatory to have an Mcard with a bank account, said Larry Durst, manager of the Entr6e Office. "We hope many students will want to have one. It's up to the student. It abso- lutely (remains optional)," he said. A .nrann st . -r -r-tn to- . place Entree Plus. Judy Ash, the coordina- torofBank Card Services, said that a court ruled it illegal for Eastem Michigan Uni- versity to operate a system similar to Entrde Plus, in which a university ex- tended credit to students. "We all wish Entree Plus didn't have to go away," Ash said. "Students liked go- ing to the Entre Office, signing a form, and getting $100." Ted Kim, an LSA senior, said he has been pleased with the Entree Plus system. "I liked most that it got charged to my parents and not me," he said. In March, more than 500 students took part in a pilot study with the Mcard. Ash said that students in focus group dis- cussions said that overall, they were sat- isfied with the new card. "(Students) liked the fact they didn't have to carry cash. It was convenient not to have to carry more than one card," she said. Kim cn;d he ope not haveMcward We all wish Entree Plus didn't have to go away." Judy Ash Coordinator of Bank Card Services but might get one. "I don't see how I couldn't get interested in it if they're phas- ing out Entr6e Plus. I used it most of the time at the Union. (With Mcard), I could use it at McDonald's or Burger King," he said. Kristina Rivera, a senior in the School of Education, said she was hesitant about getting an Mcard. "I am always worried about the credit card factor -it alwaysbe- ing there, using it to buy food, and losing track," she said. Durst sid that students who want the Mcard can bring their old card in and ex- change it at no cost. Students who re- ceived new cards last fall have their pic- ture and signature stored in a computer file. He said that it could be possible for students to call requesting an Mcard and have the photo and signature placed on a new card. Kim said he had to get a new identifi- cation card last fall but said it was not a hassle. "I did have to go to the (Student Activities Building) butI can't say that it was a pain." Rivera said she agreed that the iden- tification card change last year was easy. "It wasn't that big of a deal." Durst said that he was trying to implement the plan with very little in- convenience. "My job is to generate cards. If (the new card) is something ev- eryone wants, I'll be replacing 20,000 cards again. We hope we're moving in the rifht direction," he said. Ash said that Mcard will have some new features this fall. Students will be able to electronically transfer funds from their BankStripe to their cash chip, and they can have financial aid and Uni- versity paychecks deposited directly to their Mcard account. Parents could transfer money from any bank to a student's Mcard bank stripe. Presently, the University is looking to build a large base of off-campus mere chants to paticipate in the program. "We want to have 250 merchants. In order to provide students with access to off-cam- pus, we had to go with a debit card," Ash said. She also said that the University wanted to include stores at the Briarwood Mall in addition to merchants near cam- pus. "We've made phone calls to other stores. There'sbeen alot of interest in this," she said.
