Wednesday, July 5, 1995 - The Michigan Daily - 7 Study: 8 percent of college students carry weapons 0By Steve Seepersaud Daily Staff Reporter Nearly 8 percent of college students carry weapons, according to a nation- wide study released last month by Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. Researchers found that 7 1/2 percent of students carried guns, knives or other weapons for reasons besides work or hunting. Responses were gathered from al- most 30,000 students on 73 campuses. In Ann Arbor, city ordinances define weapons as any firearm, bomb, nun-chuk or throwing star. No one is allowed to carry a weapon in public except for pur- poses of law enforcement, educational programs, authorized sales or protection of a place of business. It is against city law to carry a solid knife with a blade longer than four inches. The legal size limit for folding knives is three inches. Regents' ordinances, which govern activity on the University campus, are al- most identical to the city's laws. Officer David Russell of the University's Department of Public Safety expanded the definition to in- clude any item that could be used as a weapon. "A stick would be considered a weapon if someone were hitting some- one else with it, because of the way they're using it," he said. Michigan statutes apply to mace and pepper spray.
