Ndiaye feels that some players think they are better basketball players than they are because Fisher lets them believe it. "If you tell him that he's the great- est player on earth - 'you can do this and you can do that' - then he won't ask himself if he can do it or not. That's a problem," says Ndiaye. "That's why I love Maceo. He's one of those players that thinks he's nobody. He always learns and Maceo's going to be great." Ndiaye also acknowledges that the uus y, Junle L, 7 The Tarheels practice together every night. The Wolverines practice two days a week. players have to take some responsibil- ity and begin to respect each other. By respect, Ndiaye means calling each other to see how things are going. He explains that it does not have to be a half-hour phone call and a player does not have to be a junior or senior to do it. In addition, the Wolverines have to put this past year and all their differ- ences behind them. On a trip to North Carolina, Ndiaye witnessed what a successful team is like. At the University of North Caro- lina, all the players remained at school after the year ended. Michigan had a lot of players leave. The Tarheels prac- tice together every night. The Wolver- ines practice two days a week. In Chapel Hill, the players go out together to clubs at night. The Wolverines don't even know each other's phone num- bers, Ndiaye says. "I don't see my teammates except for Jimmy (King) and Ray (Jackson)," says Ndiaye. "Willie (Mitchell), has a good excuse. He's in Japan or some- where. The rest, I don't see them. "If you ask me where Travis (Conlan) is, I couldn't tell you. I don't know where he lives, I don't know his phone number, I don't know anything about him. I think that's kind of sad." So right now, the Wolverines have a big problem. Like a broken car, they may look good on the outside, with an abundance of talent, but if they don't fix the inside they will have trouble winning. Ndiaye says the perfect ex- ample is the San Antonio Spurs. "They probably had the best talent in the league. What happened to them? They were home playing golf when Houston was playing the champion- ship game," says Ndiaye. "We can al- ways say we're better than Western Kentucky. But who won? Western Kentucky. So it doesn't matter. If you lose, you lose." Ndiaye is not only frustrated about losing in the first round of the NCAA tournament but he feels that every year Michigan comes close to winning the Big Ten Championship but never does. His solution is giving players an accu- rate assessment of their strengths and weaknesses so that they don't think they are better than they are. "Maurice has three more years. If you asked me where Travis (Conlan) is, I couldn't tell you. I don't know where he lives, I don't know his phone number. I don't know anything about him. I think that's kind of sad." -Mahktar Ndiaye Michigan baseketball player Willie has three more years. Dugan (Fife) is the only senior. So if those people don't fix the problem right now and try to be tight - because they're going to have to live with each other for three more years -they won't win any games," says Ndiaye. "It doesn't matter if they are Michael Jordan, they won't win." No matter how they look on the Ndiayo IEckE!
