But thanks to her excellent recruit- ing in 1994, Hutchins has Sara Grif- fin, a virtual superwoman when it comes to fast-pitch softball. Both Kovach and Griffin earned Louisville Slugger NSCA-NCAA Di- vision I All-America honors last week- end. Kovach, a native of Pittsburgh, Pa., was chosen as an at-large pitcher while Griffin was selected with utility player status. Michigan was one out of four other teams to boast more than one player as an All-American. No. 1 Arizona had the most with six. Fresno State, UNLV, Southwestern Louisiana and the Wolverines had two apiece. Griffin (23-6) shocked the confer- ence as a freshman this year, as she consistently hit the stuffing out of the ball from the plate and tore up the bat- ters she faced from the mound. Even as early as October 1994, Griffin was proving she was meant for greatness. In her first collegiate game against Eastern Michigan, Griffin threw a one- hitter from the rubber and hit 3-for-3 with a single, double, triple and three RBI. From there Griffin continued to dazzle foes with her offensive and de- fensive prowess throughout the season. The California native led the Wolver ines not only in batting average, bu also in hits, triples, home runs, slug ging percentage and on-base percent- age. Hutchins obviously had confidence in Griffin's ability from the mound as well because she pitched every game since postseason play began, winning six out of the last eight. Kovach was no slouch either. Throughout her four years, Kovach SEE SoFrBAu, PAGE 13 Salomon Brothers Salomon Brothers is an international investment banking firm that makes markets in securities and provides a broad range of underwriting, financial advisory, and research services to governments, corporations, and institutional investors.
