However, he did not make it to the finals. (NCAAs were) to showcase the strides I made because there were a lot of officials from the Jamaican selecting body - and they were impressed." - Neil Gardner Michigan hurdler "I fell victim to the lane draw be- cause I was on the outside," Gardner said. "I ran a little too fast. I was in lane seven and there was nobody in lane eight. I ran not being able to see anyone." However, Gardner was far from disappointed with his performance. "The national meet was essentially to showcase the strides I made because there were a lot of officials from the Ja- maican selecting body - and they were impressed," Gardner said. Junior Trinity Townsend also com- peted for Michigan in the 400 dash and made it to the semifinals. He finished 20th overall with a time of 47.38. The winner of the event was Greg Haughton of George Mason, who ran a 44.62. Track season has now come to a close for the Wolverines. Many of the athletes will go in different directions. Sullivan will go home to Ontario, Canada for a week but will return at the end of the month for the European World Championships, beginning in August. Wheatley is off to the U.S. Mobile National Championships in Sacra- mento, Calif., and will also be flying to New York for football mini-camp with the New York Giants. Gardner is heading home to Kingston, Jamaica and will try out for European World Championships. Townsend will stay in Ann Arbor to take classes. WOMEN Continued from page 16 1 1/4). Longe also finished 10th in the javelin and 18th in the 800. The top eight finishers in each event receive All- America status. Amut it was the experience of running with future Olympians, such as George Mason's Diane Guthrie-Gresha, which was great for Longe, said Michigan coach James Henry. It was great to see Tania (Longe) see athletes at a level she will be at and in many (ways) is." -James Henry Michigan track coach "Tania got a chance-to compete f the second time against Gunthrie -who broke Jackie Joyner-Kersey's (NCAA 7 heptathlon) record - and got to make an TO/Daiy acquaintance for the future," Henry said. "It was great to see Tania see athletes at a level she will be at and in many (ways) is." Although Longe's hurdle and shot put performances were outstanding, Henry feels that she could have per- formed better in the other events. Hen attributes her finishes to the weather. "It was a hot two days and (Longe) may have dehydrated," Henry said. The third Wolverine to compete, Monika Black, did not do as well as she had hoped. Her high jump, reaching 5-9 1/4, put her in 13th place. UCLA's Amy Acuff won the event with a 6-5 jump. Black and Longe will spend the rest of the summer in preseason training. "Both have ben to the mountain a have come back to the bottom to start the foundation," Henry said. The women's track team took 23rd at the NCAA Championships. INTRAMURAL SPORTS PROGRAM AMAZING!
