Messiah
21st Century Jesus
American Recordings
If there is ever a "Rave Til Dawn
II," the producers would be remiss if
Messiah was not included. This is not
necessarily a good thing. Messiah's
form of techno music is everything
that people hate about techno; the
music is loud, dissonant, overly in-
dustrial and obnoxious.
Someone should let Messiah know
that overt sampling is no longer avant
garde. This album sounds as if it is at
least three years old in that it indulges
in techno clichds (if such a thing ex-
ists) without adding anything new to
a genre of music that is highly self-
conscious and expansive.
Even Nine Inch Nails would be
embarrassed by the combination of
reverbed, pseudo-singing over hard-
core techno beats found on "21st Cen-
tury Jesus." This album is the kind of
music that could get someone evicted
- for playing at any volume.

"In your face" is probably the best
way to describe this ill-conceived al-
bum and "in your garbage" is the best
way to describe this album's proper
place. Let us all hope that this Messiah
will not be resurrected any time soon.

Trance
Bon't de foncused. The Trance la-
bel is not a techno label. It is, in fact,
one of the better purveyors of punk
type rock around these days, and this
album exhibits this tendency well.
The Cherubs take heavy guitar and
harsh head-piercing samples and com-
bine them to create a wonderful rockin'
sound. Or something like that. Vocals
get buried sometimes, while at other
times they take a more forward posi-
tion. Songs like "Stag Party" and
"Baby Huey" are at the front of all
things good about sampling in today's
world. It's nice and noisy guitar music
for those who are out of the '80s
