Rybock The first "Addams Family" movie was rather like Jupiter - all atmo- sphere, no real substance. They The Flintstones Directed by Brian Levant, written by Tom S. Parker & Jim Jennewein' and Steven E. deSouza; with John Goodman and Elizabeth Perkins. learned from the first, and most of the mistakes were corrected by the sec- ond installment. Unfortunately, the makers of "The Flintstones" didn't take those lessons to heart, so their final product is all details and not much else. That being said, it should also be emphasized that "The Flintstones," like the first "Addams Family" film, is still very enjoyable. Anyone who knows the words to the "Bedrock Twitch" will find the film to be very faithful to the Hanna-Barbera origi- nal (which it betterhave been-both of the Flintstones creators were on the set making cameo appearances). The casting of the film is really the heart of what makes the film work. No one, other than John Goodman, can fill Fred's orange pelt. And while the casting of the Rubbles (Rick Moranis and Rosie O'Donnell) may have been a bit questionable (weren't Betty's measurements 34-4-36?), the actors wipe away all doubt of the casting with their first "Hey, Fred" and Betty giggle. (Plus, it is not every day that one gets to see an icon of Hollywood'sGoldenAgeleadaconga line.) The plot (to use the term very loosely), involves Cliff Vandercave (Kyle MacLachlan)embezzling funds from Slate and Co., and setting up Fred to take the fall.
