However, the inevitablecritical backlash seemed to hi this genre hardr ihan most, and many of these bands found them- selves softening up their sound and signing wit major record labels, However, KMFDM chose to re- m in on the feisty Wax Trax label, and, on their latest release, "Angst," they have managed to retain the pow- erful, beat-driven sound that was al- ways one of the stronger voices in the Wax Trax crowd. "Everyone left be- cause everyone was using Wax Trax as alaunching station forbigger record companies," explained KMFDM's mastermind, Sasha Konietzko. "That ists are virtuosos ... They all briny a certain style, a certain personality with them. It creates a variety that I miss in bands like Ministry,' Konietzko said. In addition, En Esch, KMFDM't bald-headed resident maniac has lef1 behind his manic percussive assaulti to take over the job as sole frontmar of KMFDM, a role he had previous shared with Konietzko. "It used to. that we sort of shared the front, but now I'm more on top and he's in the front," Konietzko explained. "Due tc his accident four hears ago, it's im- possible for him to drum." Recently, the Wax Trax label de- clared bankruptcy and was bought out by TVT Records, but, in bands like KMFDM, the sound that made a name for Wax Trax still retains original strength. Anyone who missi the old "industrial" sound or wants tc find out what it was all about should check out the show and find out why this band was able to stick with the sound that many left behind. The AngstFest Tourfeaturing KMFDM, Sister Machine Gun and Chemlab snarls its way to Industry in Pontiac on Friday, May 27. Tickets are $12.50 in advance, ana this a 6 p.m. early show. But that don't mean you can get in if you're not 18 or older, as usual. Call 810- 334-1999 for more information.
