He said they had given some consideration in moving me to the starting rotation. "But right now I'm the only lefthanded pitcher in the bullpen, so as far as my team goes, that's where they need me now. So definitely for this year I am in the bullpen." Newton has excelled in his spe- cialized role, leading the Jammers in ERA with a sparkling 2.05, while carrying a 3-2 record and 26 strikeouts in 31 innings. And al- though he will certainly be a fixture at Jamestown for this season, his performance and the fact that he is a lefty could move him rapidly through the Tigers' system. "I think you have to be optimistic," Newton said. "Ithink if you're not, you can become frustrated in not coming up. There is not a ton of lefthanded pitching in the organization, so in that regard I think I am off to a good start." One thing that Newton hopes will make him an even more promising commodity is learning to toughen up against lefthanded hitters - although as a lefty he is already inherently at an advantage against other southpaws. "I would say the pitch makeup is there, but the one thing we've worked on a little bit this summer is throwing sidearm to lefthanded hitters,. which makes it especially difficult to hit," Newton said. It is also beneficial to Newton's career that the Tigers' system is hardly chock-full of pitching prospects. And so if Newton can perfect his setup role, one day he could be pitching not too far from where he played his college ball. "I went to Tiger games when I was in school and Tiger Stadium is a great place to see baseball and to play base- ball," Newton said. "So ending up there would definitely be exciting."
