Indiana's women's tennis team went into the tournament as the No. 2 seed, but also having won the last four conference championships. Unfortunately for the Wolverines (9-2 Big Ten, 13-3 overall) the Hoo- siers made it five in a row. Indiana (11-2, 20-5) defeated Michigan, 5-2, in the championship match last Sunday at Iowa's Klotz Tennis Center. It was the second time this season the Hoosiers beat Michigan; the only Big Ten team to do so this season. En route to the victory, the Hoo- siers won three of the five singles matches,andclinchedthematch when their No. 2 doubles team of Jody Lin " NW..01 and Dannielle Paradine defeated Michigan's Liz and Sarah Cyganiak. Sarah, however didn't feel that the Hoosiers' tournament experience was the difference. "They just seemed to step and perform better,"she said. "It just came together for them on that day." Angie Popek at No. 3 and Simone Lacher at No. 5 were the only Wolver- ines who won singles matches. Michigan reached the champion- ship match by knocking off Penn' State last Friday, and Wisconsin last Saturday. The Wolverines topped the Lady Lions 5-1, winning all but one match. Lacher clinched the match for the Wolverines with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Penn State's Kristen Kovalik in the No. 6 singles position. Against Wisconsin, Michigan lost only two singles matches. The Bad- gers' Lauren Gavaris defeated the Wolverines' Bojana Jankovic, 7-5, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot. The other loss came at No. 5 where Jamie Fouret defeated Liz Cyganiak. Individually Michigan picked up three postseason honors. Sarah Cyganiak and Jankovic were named to the Alt-Big Ten Conference Team. Sarah also won Big Tet Freshman of the Year. Coach Bitsy Ritt was also honored as Big Tett Coach of the Year. "She defiitely deserved it," Sa- rah said. 'There weren't really any other candidates. "To us, it would have been a shocker if she didn't get it." The Wolverines now have to wait to see if they qualify for the NCAA Championships. The selection com- mittee is scheduled to announce the 20-team field today. The women's tennis team came within one victory of its first Big Ten championship last weekend.
