G Funk Era Rush Associated Labels Already having made a name for himself producing hit singles for art- ists such as DFC, MC Breed and Nate Warre. Dogg, Warren G has decided to finally take the big plunge by releasing his first "solo" album, "GFunk Era."In actual- ity, this 12-songalbumfeaturesahodge- podge of rap veterans and newcomers fromtheDeathRow family. And, most importantly, this CD, which starts off with the hit single "Regulate"("Above the Rim" soundtrack), jumps from beginnning to end. "G Funk Era" spotlights some of the top hardcore artists in the field, both old and new, from Nate Dogg to the Twinz to Lady Levi and a host of others. The Super Soul Sis has a solo on this album aptly named after her. This album also features the "Gangsta Sermon" interlude. Let's just say you've never heard Jesse Jackson preach like this before. Hardcore beats and slammin' lyr- ics are trademarks of "G Funk Era." The very spirit which drove Dre's "Chronic" up the charts can be found throughout this CD as well. In the relatively short, yet rich, Death Row family history, a host of powerful rappers and DJs have emerged. "G Funk Era" continues in the spirit of that tradition. It's low on fluff and packed full with the good stuff. -Eugene Bowen Various Artists DGC Rarities Vol. 1 DGC "My mama always told me 'life is like a box of chocolates--you never know what you're gonna get."' Wht -nrc linemm ar tous(Nirvana, Counting Crows, Beck) to the obscure (Weezer, that dog). The songs range from sweet and chewy to hard and bitter, metaphorically. Teenage Fanclub's "Mad Dog 20/ 20," Weezer's "Jamie" and Hole's "Beautiful Son" deserve to be heard by a larger audience, but Cell's "Never Too High" and Sloan's "Stove/ Smother" are tedious examples of why most rarities should remain so. Nirvana's track is an alternate ver- sion of "Stay Away," Beck wheezes out the aptly named "Bogusflow," and Counting Crows remain legends in their own minds on "einstein on the beach (for an eggman)." "DGC Rarities Vol. 1" is a very mixed box of chocolates indeed. -Heather Phares Various Artists Kiss My Ass Mercury That quintessentially '70s rock group Kiss is the subject of this new tribute album. But the completely independent "Hard to Believe" is still a bette tribute, in part because it has th Melvins and Nirvana but especi because it sounds better. W - Ted Watts MC 900 FT Jesus One Step Ahead of the Spider American The new MC 900 FT Jesus is al jazzy, and most of the songs are eithe more serious or less obviously fu as his past work. The single "If I Only Had a Brain" is the most obvious exception to the lack of humor rule, as he even uses the same voice as he did in "Truth..." as well as the goofy mindset which "Tip- toe Through the Inferno" also has. The more serious material is fine, too, but not as good in the end. It's hard to understand why the MC mo " ker remains, as this is nothing lik rap album. Ultimately, the CD's biggest flaw is in the lengthiness of some of the songs. They just go on and on in a more mood music way than most people are comfortable with. Oh, well, it's still interesting. -Ted Watts APPLICATION DEADLINE July 29, 1994 STUDENT PUBLICATIONS BLDG. Senior Staf offce 420 Maynard Il* ea :a
