East Lansing."
, You want a secret, Fontes? How
does Michigan 31, Michigan State 3
sound to you?
10:50: My first attempt to round up
some free beverages and hot dogs for
me and my stoic photographer, both of
us penniless, is harshly denied.
"These are for the celebrities and
players only," says a volunteer guard-
ing the wealth of goods.
Iwonder tomyselfifmaybe Sparky
kouldn't be so kind as to snag some-
thing for me. Or maybe Ican ask Bobby
Knight. No, IdecideI'dratherkeep my
front teeth.
11:00: Sparky tees off on hole #2.
Although demonstrating a form that
would make Cecil Fielder look grace-
ful, he nails the ball over the inclined
hill and onto the fairway.
One of the corporate bigwigs fol-
lows him up by flubbing a shot about

10 yards and off into the woods. I
imagine Sparky humbly pointing out
that it might help if he led with the
handle of the bat while stepping to the
pitcher.
Sparky does say, like most of the
celebrities at the tournament, how
much respect he has for Bo and this
event.
"Bo and me over the years, even
before he became president of the ball
club (Tigers), were excellent friends,"
Anderson said. "After he was there for
two years, I found out what a great
person he was."
11:20:I approach the food supply
cart at the second hole. AsIam about to
beg for a hamburger, it inexplicably
drives off.
11:22: The food cart stops at the
eighth hole. Once again, it drives off
just as I catch up to it. This is getting
cruel. If I was Bob Wojonowski, I
knowl'dgetthathamburger. I may just
go ahead and nag Bobby Knight for
some help.

12:00: Cazzie Russell, Michigan
basketball legend and ex-NBA star,
demonstrates how much respect Bo
has earned over the years. Although
Russell played ball at Michigan before
Bowasthefootball coach, hespeaksof
only one thing when asked why he was
present.
"Bo demands respects and is in
charge,"Russellsaid."Yourally around
a guy like that. This is a very classy and
well-organized tournament and that
epitomizes Bo Schembechler."
12:45: My food worries are tem-
porarily solved. An ice cream truck
is giving out free sample cones. I
consume three cones before rushing
off to catch Engler hack the greens
to pieces.
1:15: Engler tees-off on the first
hole. He slices the ball so far to the left,
you'd think he was a Democrat. He
slices his second shot too, losing it in
thevegetationgrowthontheleftsideof
the fairway. His third shot sails toward
a group of spectators watching the ac-
tion on the rightside of the fairway
before it hits a tree.
I ask one of the disgruntled spec-
tators whether Engler lost her vote
by nearly pegging her with a golf
ball.
"Boy, you got that right," she said.
Convinced that I've caught the
peak moment of the tourney, I head
home.

arrested for possession of marijuana
and enroll in a drug rehabilitation
center. Apparently it was because
she was pushed too early to a play
tennis at the professional level.
DarrylStrawberry recentlyviolated
Major League Baseball's drug policy.
It was far from the first time that he been
caught. He was sent to rehab and re-
leased by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The San Francisco Giants picked
up his rights and sent him to the mi-
nors - for a weekend.
While down on the farm he hit a
homer and immediately went back to

the bigs. And nearly noone really cared
that he probably still has a drug prob-
lem. They just want him playing ball.
Now, I know that sports is a N
part of society and an important on.
That said, though, we all need to
take this world of sports a little less
seriously, especially these days.
We hold the competitors up to
standards higher than those that we
set for everyone else and we shouldn't
because they aren't superhuman; they
only play a game better than most
everyone else.
It took a bad round of golf w
some good friends to remember th
but it was one of the best afternoons
I've spent in a long time.
