mary reason this incoming class is so
big is not the quality of the application
pool.
"We admitted a large number of
students because we expected a large
graduating class this year," said Uni-
versity spokesperson Lisa Baker.
The Admissions Office often uses
new students to balance the total num-
ber of students at the University. "The
overall enrollment is not much differ-
ent from the past. A snapshot at any
given time gives a consistent total en-
rollment," Baker said.
Baker said the total enrollment at
the University last year was 36,758, of
which23,301 wereundergraduates.She
said she expects this year's totals tobe

similar to last year's.
Most incoming students, including.
Dave Alpem, were excited to find out
they were part of the biggest class in
University history.
Alpern said he hopes many first-
year students will be from outside of
Michigan since he is from out of state.
But he added that the number of
University students is so overwhelm-
ing that it makes little difference if his
class has a few more students than any
other class.
Duderstadt said it is difficult to be
certain the class will be the predicted
size. "It is relatively inexpensive for
students to send in enrollment deposits
and change their minds," he said.
