I ' U - The Michigan Daily - Wednesday, July 6, 1994 Chemistry good, movie troubled _I By Melissa Rose Bernardo s "ILovePaper-thin Plots"? "ILove Hackneyed Storylines"? "I Love Pre- I Love Trouble Written by Nancy Meyers and Charles Shyer; directed by Charles Shyer; with Julia Roberts and Nick Nolte. dicting theEndingsofMovies"?There has to be a better title for this damn thing. The trouble with "I Love Trouble" goes way beyond the title. It goes beyond the familiar and fun-loving facesof JuliaRoberts andNickNolte. It goes beyond the unrealistic plot. It goes, in fact, right through this thing masquerading as a movie. Since Ron Howard already took 4be idea of a day in the life of a journalist, "ILove Trouble" resorts to silliness. The premise is this: Peter Brackett (Nick Nolte) is a former re- porter, current columnist and rising novelist who works at the Chicago Chronicle (the Tribune in real life); Sabrina Peterson is a cub reporter, new to the city and new to the Chi- cago Globe (the Sun). The two clash when covering a big story, and go from being enemies to detectives to partners to husbandand wifeto lovers to enemies and back to husband and wife. The film focuses on the conflict- ing personalities of the two reporters: he's a veteran, she's arookie; helikes rare steak, she likes turkey burgers; he hits on anything in a skirt, she's strictly business. Hey -Paula Abdul said it - opposites attract, and con- flict equals comedy. The games that the two play (he sends her aGlobe and a puppy to pee on it) are definitely worth a few laughs, and the trouble they get into is cute as well (ducking into a Vegas wedding chapel toditch a killer and then getting married). Roberts and Nolte carry what there is of a film; their banter is continu- ously energetic (possibly aided by their said off-screen antagonism) and their characters' attraction is believ- able. It is the chemistry between the pair that makes this film watchable and arguably enjoyable at times. But consider this: how many re- porters would risk their lives for a story? Get the story no matter what, but do you band together with your competition, traveling to all corners of the country to conduct an investi- gation (on those bursting newspaper budgets), climbing elevator shafts, dodging bullets and jumping from balcony to balcony in heels? And when you're hanging over a 50-foot drop, barely clutching onto metal grat- ings, do you free one hand to catch a vital piece of evidence? Of an infor- mal poll conducted among 20 future journalists, theresoundinganswerwas Whodunit? Julia & Nick try to figure that out in "I love Trouble," but already, The Shadow knows (and he knew enough not to appear in this film). aunanimous"Hell no!"Dothesescript writers have any idea what the aver- age journalist gets paid? And the movie has even less cred- ibility considering that Roberts and Nolte had stunt doubles. If a journal- ist would do all that for a story, wouldn't an actor do the same for a film? "I Love Julia's New Hair-do". Love Nick Nolte's Wrinkles"? "I Love..."? I LOVE TROUBLE is playing at Briarwood &Showcase. "The Things That I Used to Do" proves that these boyz got some soul- ful sounds one would never expect from two white guys who look like members of Metallica. "Blues Mu- sic" gives them a chance to show off some of their old school funk which melodiously clashes with the round- da-way "Baby's Got Sauce." Listening to "G. Love and Special Sauce," one thing becomes readily apparent. Booker T and the MG's That's the Way it Should Be Columbia Booker T and the MG's helped put the swing into '60s instrumentals. Now they're back with a new album that bridges their legendary past with morecontemporary music. While the result is fine all around, some pieces stand out as being up to snuff with their early work. "Mo' Greens," "Have a Heart" and "I Can't Stand the Rain" (yes, the Tina Turner song) have the warm, rich, bluesy sound of their clas- sics. And that's the way it should be. - Heather Phares Booker T and the MG's will be at the Majestic Friday at a cost to you of $17.50. Nor is it the piece of crap that ot people have been making it out to f. The album is an eclectic mixture of styles and moods that is a positive influence at times, buta negative one at others. The punksy "Tough Guy" and "Heart Attack Man" are fine dis- tractions from the rapoftherestofthe album, and the presence of Q-Tip and Biz Markie are great musical moves. Thepretentious singing may have turned off hip-hop fans, but their originality can't be criticized. This album will not slip by the ears of the hip-hop head as easi* Some of this album is slammin', with drumtracksthatare full ofgreatorigi- nal sounds. The samples are much more melodic and diverse than previ- ously while there is more live music on the tracks. Each song expresses something important. With fewexceptions, there are no tracks to skip. It's not boring, it's not something that's been do0 before, there's mo' better beats, mo liver tracks and mo' funky samples. Their development is very appropri- ate.
