Do expect a riveting (and educational) story of family, survival and the triumph of good over evil. "The Lion King" chronicles the life of future lion- king Simba, who begins as a young cub. But because of a bitter brotherly grudge, Mufasa (Simba's father)is killed, and Simba must face the challenge of accepting his father's death and even- tually his own responsibility. Do expect another visually-astounding ani- mationextravaganza. Thejungle animalsare beautiful, realistic and full of life. And of course, the main characters stand out with unique personalities and even better anima- tion. You'll jump out of your seat during an unbelievably striking stampede scene. And do expect the story to be rendered with the most fitting and believable human voices to be found, many in accordance with the African set- ting: Jonathan Taylor Thomas (Randy on TV's "Home Improvement") and Matthew Broderick as the young and older Simba, KoXert tjuiaume to moxey), v wupi ouluuerg (a hyena), and James EarlJones (Mufasa). Perhaps the best surprise of all is Jeremy Irons' deliciously evil performance as Scar, Mufasa's brother and Disney's requisite villain. The visuals are breathtaking and the characters endearing, but the music is - well, just there. Hans Zimmer's background music, propelled by rich harmonies and infectious African rhythms, leaves the biggest impression.NoneofElton John's music - with lyrics by musical theater veteran,- TimRice-standsout; there are no show-stoppers like "Under the Sea," "Be Our Guest" or "Friend Like Me." Elton John clearly has the capacity to write an incredible movie-musical, but Disney's writers most likely would not allow him to do so. Five songs does not a movie-musical make, so call this a movie with music. But perhaps the best thing about "The Lion King" is that Disney could nevermake a Broadway musical out of this one. Of course, there is "Cats" ... THE LION KING is playing at Showcase and Briarwood. __ 1 Newsletters Newsletters Newsletters Newsletters Big savings on newsletters for all clubs, businesses, and organizations. -T MCAT We have the only INDEPENDENTLY VERIFIED national grad test score improvements.
