She said she wants to study archaeology in the future and stressed the importance of education in reach- ing a career goal. "Education is really important be- cause people who don't go to school don't realize their options," she said. Her mother agreed and added that the Take Our Daughters to Work Day is also important in giving girls a day for themselves. Lehman said while the day may have no long-lasting effect, it lends recognition toward accepting women in the workplace. Some University students also par- ticipated in the project. LSA junior Robin Baker spent the day with her father touring Ford automotive plants in Dearborn and sitting in on business meetings. Baker said her father, Ken who is a manufacturer's representative for the automotive industry, had never asked her to work before that day. She said she thought the day was important so that girls could realize their career opportunities. "It's amale-dominated world and I think girls are intimidated," she said. "But times are changing." Although the Ann Arbor public school system acknowledged the day by excusing the absence ofany girlthat wished to participate, it had only one formal program that actively encour- aged them to get involved. Organized by State Rep.Lynn Riv- ers (D-Ann Arbor) and several other legislators, the program invited a girl from each Ann Arbor high school to Lansing to see the law making process up close. Huron, Pioneer and Roberto Clemente Center High schools were each represented in the program. Rivers said the girls spent the day on the state House floorwith her, expe- riencing how the legislature runs and meeting other women lawmakers. "'They left with the clear idea that this kind of job is available to them," she said. Trade in your milk crates You've suffered through milk crate furniture. You've survived macaroni and cheese.
