'Hot Shots' scores By JOHN R. RYBOCK With his new film,"Hot Shots Part Deux," auteur James Abrahams has once again proven his natural gift for creatingintelligentsituationalcomedy Hot Shots Part Deux Directed by Jim Abrahams; written by Jim Abrahams and Pat Proft; with Charlie Sheen, Uoyd Bridges and Valeria Golino. which ... HOLD ON! I just want to put my twocentsworthintosaythatotherfilm columns in other papers have taken this movie waaaayyy too seriously. Comeon!JimAbrahams("HotShots," "Big Business") is the guy whoalong with partnersDavidand Jerry Zucker, came up with "Surely you can't be serious." "I am serious - and don't call me Shirley." By now, you're familiar with their "style" (to use the term loosely) of comedy - throw everything at the. screen and hope that it sticks. Well, "Hot Shots Part Deux" is no different. The basic, and very loose premise has Topper Harley (Charlie Sheen) on an MIA mission, or, as the film puts it, "going in to get the men, who went in to get the men, who..." AmongthecaptivesismentorColo- nel Walters, aka. Richard Crenna, spoofing his "Rambo" role and either having alot of fun, or taking it way too seriously (p.s. "Whose Line Is It Any- way?"fanscanlookforregularcontes- tant, Ryan Stiles). 'Their target? An evil (and some- what flaky) Middle East dictator with a mustache and a beret. But wait! It's not Saddam. No, this guy's country is located between "Iraq" and "A Hard Place." Thoughitbasically spoofs Rambo, "HotShotsPartDeux"hitslotsofother targets along the way. Instead of dis- cussing the fine camera work, here's a brieflistofwhatripetargetstheychoose to go after: "TheHuntforRedOctober,"Gerald Ford, "Basic Instinct," George Bush's intestinal trouble, "Lady and the Tramp," Japanese cuisine, "T2," GabriellaSabatini,"NoWayOue'(hey! They can spoof an old movie!), "Casablanca" (OK, they can spoof REALLY old movies), "Sea Hunt" (you got Lloyd Bridges, you use him), American Gladiators, the damn Ener- gizer rabbit, those 10-in-one hunting knives,"TheWizardofOz"andmuch, much more. Yes, it's more of the same. But at the same time, it's springtime fresh. This type of film ("Airplane!" "Top Secret!""The Naked Gun") began by spoofing movie genres, but it has be- come a genre itself. "Hot Shots Part Deux!" is not the best film Jim Abrahams has put together, with or without the Zuckers. But it certainly isn't the worst. It boils down to this: if you like these movies, you'llilike this one. And if you don't like these movies... see it anyway. You might surprise yourself and like it. And if you are not familiar with these movies, then you are either too young toreadthis anyway, or you, and trust me on this, just won't get it.
