Peli nka receives another honor
FROM STAFF REPORTS
Michigan basketball player Rob
Pelinka did not win the national bas-
ketball championship this past season,
nordidhejustrunaway fromhome, so
it only makes sense that he won't be
going to Disneyland.
He will, however, head to San Di-
ego the weekend of June6-9 to receive
a$5000 grant courtesy of the National
Association of Collegiate Directors of
Athletics and, yes, the Walt Disney
Company. The grant is to be used for
postgraduate studies. Pelinka, who
plans to attend law school in the fall,
ranked as one of 10 athletes in the
nation to be honored.
Pelinka, a recent graduate of the
School of Business Administration,
compileda3.91 grade-point average at
Michigan with a bachelor's degree in
finance. HeparticipatedinthreeNCAA
Final Four tournaments for the Wol-
verinesincluding the 1989 champion-
ship,andhemade the academic all-Big
Ten squad three times. This past sea-
son, he received Michigan's Big Ten
Medal of Honor.
Inadditiontohisoncourtandclass-
roomachievements,Pelinka,originally
from Lake Bluff, Ill., has contributed
greatly tohiscommunity. Hehasserved
as avolunteer speaker and counselor at
inner-city Chicago youth basketball
camps, and he has also assisted pastors
in conferences and speaking engage-
ments for youth groups.
The 10 winners were chosen from
a record 331 nominees, the most in the
four-year history of the award.
SAILING
CONTINUED FROM PAGE11
The team with the lowest number of
points wins. It doesn'tmatter who you
beat each time, as long as you beat the
same number of boats and stay consis-
tent. Whereas in match racing, it's
against one other boat and you've got
to beat that boat."
Depending on the time of year, the
club has asmany as400members. The
vast majority do not compete. The
racing team is the only part that com-
petes, although some members com-
pete against each other on weekends.
"Some people like to race, not be-
cause they're competitive, but it's a
way of applying sailing skills,"Bosley
said. "Racing is a way of improving
your skills by giving them some fo-
cus."
Experienceisnot aproblem.Every
Saturday moming is devoted to teach-
ing. "From 9 am. to 1 p.m., the only
thing we do is teach," Bosley said.
Sailing is a sport for which you
don't need fancy gear. A pair of old
tennis shoes and a pair of old work
gloves - that's about it.
"We charge a student for four
months, $60," Bosley said. "You'd
spend that in aday if you got alesson
at a professional yacht club. We're a
fairly inexpensivealternative toapro-
fessional club.
"The biggest thing facing us now
is keeping our members. We en-
courage any person who's even re-
motely interestedinustocome on out
and spend aday or two, take a lesson
or two, and see if what we have to
offer meets their expectations. I'd
really prefer to see people come out
and try us out first.
"I think we've got agood facility.
It's just a place to come and have fun
on the lake...sailing, picnicking, par-
tying, barbecues, whatever. And the
thing I wish I could do more of is get
the word out to more people that
we're here - that we exist."
Weekly meetings are held in Ann
Arbor every Thursday at7:45 p.m. in
311 West Engineering.

HARBAUGH

longs to this young crowd. And judg-
ing from his views of the University,
perhaps he exemplifies why he and his
contemporaries participate the most in
fundraising activities: the memories
are more vivid, younger, more fresh
than those who have been away from
Ann Arbor for a longer period of time.
After all, when he was asked to
name his greatest memory of his un-
dergraduate years,he couldn'tstop ata
single incident or aspect.
"Wow,there'ssomany,"Harbaugh
responded. "The friends I made, I still
have some of the best friends in the
world that I met here in Ann Arbor in
college. A lot of sports memories. It
wasjustagreatplacetogotoschoolfor
me. The social life was great. It's hard
to pick out just one."
The University hopes that
Harbaugh'sreappearanceon the scene
makes alumni open up both their
memory banks and their checkbooks.
In addition to Harbaugh's joyful
past,he now has an encouraging future
to anticipate. Dave Wannstedt has re-
placed the volatile Mike Ditka as the
Bears' head coach,and Harbaugh pro-
fessed excitement over the change.
"It can't help but be better,"
Harbaugh said. "We were pretty bad
last year. We've got anew attitude on
theteam.We'vehadagoodoff-season
so far."
As a free agent, Harbaugh could

he opted to stay put.
"I looked at some other teams, but
I liked my situation in Chicago,"
Harbaughsaid."Ireally thinkthatwe're
gonna win some Super Bowls here."
