Benedict named to All-America squad The Michigan softball team con- tinued to reap the benefitsofitsrecord- setting season this past week when senior left fielder Patti Benedict earned a spot on the 1993:National Softball Coaches Association All-American First Team. Benedict, the third hitter in the Wolverines'lineup, ledthe squad with a .421 batting average and 47 runs battedin. Shecompiled77hits,includ- ing nine doubles and 11 triples. She also added 14 steals to her arsenal. "Patti's selection as a First-Team All-American is a great culminating event for her outstanding Michigan career," Wolverines coach Carol Hutchins said. "She has been a leader not only in our program, but in the Big Ten, the Mideast Region and the NCAA." Benedict departs Michigan as the all-time leader in hits (244) and RBI (124) and the second best hitter (.342). She ranks among the top eight in eight statistical categories for Michgan. Earlier, Benedict had been be- stowed Big Ten Player-of-the-Year honors for the second time in her ca- reer. The University of Michigan Sail- ing Club was founded in 1938 by a small group of naval architects at the University.Since 1954,theyhavebeen situated at Baseline Lake, ap- proximately 25 minutes northwest of Ann Arbor. "We are a student organization for the University," club president and commodoreKevinBosleysaid."We're open to anyone who wants to join. And theonly difference is thenon-students pay a higher dues rate. Basically we teach sailing, wind-surfing, and then we maintain a fleet of boats and sailboards for people to use." The sailing club's fleet consists of 15 International470s,six International 420s and six Lasers. Lasers are single- handed boats, meaning they are made to sail with one person. The I-470s are double-handed boats. The skipper drives the boat while the crew person rigs the jib. I-420s are a smaller ver- sion of the470s.
