Harbaugh hopes he can help increase young alumni contributions. M' hurler earns honors By KEN DAVIDOFF DAILY SPORTS EDTOR In all faimess, it's safe to say that most young Michigan alumni are not familiarwiththenamesThomasRoach and Nellie Varner. Nottotake anything away fromthe former and current University regents. It's just that they probably don't in- spire Wolverines faithful to break out in a round of "Hail to the Victors." Harbaugh has been named the third co-chair, along with Roach and Varner, inthe University's Annual Giving Program. "I was looking togive somemoney back to Michigan, and I was talking to EdieGoldenberg(LSA dean)andsome people at the University and the sports department, butI pretty much decided to help out with this campaign," Harbaugh said. Ideally, according to Michigan Telefund Manager Laura Bourdeau, Harbaugh would lend his support to thedrive by signing letters, speaking at abanquetandposing forpostcards that could be sent out to potential donors. "He was asked because he is a young alumni and we know that we need to focus on the young alumni," Bourdeau said. One or two visits to campus by Harbaugh a year would meet the pro- ject's needs, according to Bourdeau. This should hardly be a problem for Harbaugh, who grew up in Ann Arbor. "I still have alot of friends here," Harbaugh said. "I get back here three orfour timesayear, seeagame. There's alwaysareasontocome back here, like be-bim-bop at Steve's Lunch. I went back there this morning.' Harbaugh also returns annually to host a golf toumament. Last week's, heldatStonebrookGolfCourse, hosted celebrities to raise money for charity. The pursuit of Harbaugh reflects the importance of young alumni to the University. Bourdeau said that the twentysomething crowd ranks as one of the more dependable groupswhen it comes to donations, despite the recent sagging economy. "If you're looking at decades, the recent grads have probably been the most positive," Bourdeau said. "They'retheonesthatparticipatemore. They're definitely into giving back."
