Despite the opportunity to escape the University, some students opt to stick around. Too broke to travel, trapped into a twelve month lease or faced with the horrifying prospect of spending four whole months with their parents - many students choose to take spring/ summer classes. Whether they need the credits to graduate or just find spring and sum- mersemesterseasierthanfallandwin- ter, some students said there are defi- nite advantages to spring classes. "People just seem so much more laid back during Spring Term" said Eileen Hamm, an LSA senior. Law SchoolProf.RichardFriedman saidheenjoysteaching during thesum- mer because students have fewer classes and more concentration. "I am able to get a good focus without putting excessive pressure on them," he said. Friedman spoke of one danger of teaching in the Summer Term - he said he must resist the temptation to teach in shorts. In an effort to stay cool, Friedman wearscotton slacks to teach class. One day, in dire need of doing laundry, he was left with only one pair of white boxers - speckled with little red cupids. He wore these under a pair of white slacks and went off to teach his class. "It wasnt until years later that I found out that the boxers had shown through my slacks and that the sight had made me famous among the law students,' he said. Friedman added that he feels there is a stronger sense of camaraderie among students during the summer sessions-asentimentechoedbymany students. Kathryn Herrick, an LSA junior, said she finds people are friendlier in her spring classes than they are during the regular school year. "I think this is because those who stay are upperclassmen," Herrick said, "and less stressed about school," Most students find they have more free time during spring and summer terms. Sonia Maurdeff, an LSA senior, said she likes the reprieve from the miserable Michigan winter. "It's fun going tothe Arb, drinking atDominick's and seeing moviesat the Top of the Park," she said. Eric Santos, a doctoral candidate in the School of Music, said he likes to usehisincreased freedom toassimilate and expand the mass of information he takes in during the winter, LSA senior Maize Woodford said peopleneverreallylose the feeling that summer is meant for vacation. "While you aren't completely free of responsibilities, the responsibilities feel less weighty," she said. She added that her classes take on a festive air once the weather gets warm. Of course, with all this free time andfun, students findfunding becomes a necessity. While it is often difficult to find a job which pays a living wage in Ann Arbor, the job search seems to be a bit easier after the exodus of students. "The jobs aren't necessarily bet- ter," LSA senior Travis Langekamp said, "but there are definitely more of them." Peter Tierney, a recent University grad, saidthat he always foundthe best jobs when he stayed in Ann Arbor during the summer. "By staying and working in Ann Arborover the summer,"hesaid,"Igot my foot in the door of the company which I work at now." We Don't Mimic Anyone Else!: r Hurry!
