LANSING-The capitol building
wasn't all they saw this past weekend.
The Michigan water ski team wit-
nessed its own second-place finish at
theMichiganStateToumamentheldat
the Grand River Park Lansing Boat

Club. In addition to Michigan and
Michigan State, Cincinnati, Miami of
Ohio,OhioState,OhioUniversity and
Western competed.
The Wolverines won first place in
men's tricks. Two Wolverines - Jer-
emy Greenlee and Gary Minneman
captured second and third in overall

competition. For the women,
Michigan's Trina Wegener came in
third place overall.
The weekend's activities began
brightandearly Saturdaymoming with
the slalom. For the men, Greenlee was
fourth, followed by Minneman.
Michigan's Jason Shugart struggled'

on the slalomcourse,as did many other
skiers throughout the course ofthe day.
"I wasn't deceleratedenoughcom-
ing into the turus, so when I got to five
(out of six buoys in the course), I had
too much slack," Shugart said.
Women's tricks followed, with
Kerry Grady skiing her way to a big

second place finish for Michigan.
"Repetition is the key I think, es-
pecially for tricking,"Grady said. "It's
averyfrustrating eventbecauseittakes
so much time to perfect a trick."
In men's tricks, Minneman tied for
third with Michigan captain Brian
Grieser. Minneman was the only one
who attempted a flip during his rou-
tine.
"Ialmostlandedaflip,"Minneman
said. "I've never done that before. I
camedownjustalittlecrooked.Actu-
ally, I wasn't expecting to come down
on my ski - I thought I was going to
come down on my head!"
The final and most exciting event
to watch was scheduled for Sunday
moming -jumping.
Greenlee ld the men with anin-
credible 98-foot jump, giving im a
third place finish.
"My third (jump) was the best be-
cause I even had a good lift off the
ramp," Greenlee said.
In thethree years since its founding
byGrieser,theteam'sclubstatushasn't
stopped the Wolverines from setting
and achieving high goals.
"I think we can definitely make
nationals this fall," Grieser said. "In
order to do that, we need to finish ftrst
or second in regionals. Last year we
were third."
Michigan definitely has the right
attitude -just ask the "Wave Kcing."
"Michigan is a young up andcom-
ing team and we'dnevereven thought
we'd have a shot at beating Michigan
State before.... They have had a club
for so many years and they're known
as being the best in the west,"
Michigan's CarrieSimpson said.
