Darin Figurskey, a meteorologist
for the National Weather Service of-
fice at Detroit Metropolitan Airport,
says, "If this long range pattemtends to
hold, than that would support a colder
summer."
TheNationalWeatherServicepre-
dicts by comparing current trends to
the last time that similar weather pat-
terns existed.
Geography and oceanography are
also working against a hot, dry sum-
mer, says Sousounis.
AnElNifo, warmer water fromthe
western Pacific Ocean moving east
toward South America, has caused
greater rainfall throughout the United
States.Dust from the 1990 eruption of
the MLPinatubo volcano inthe Philip-
pines remains in the atmosphere, re-
ducing the amount of sunlight that
reaches the planet's surface.
Edwards agrees that the volcano
dust may cool things down a bit, but
says predicting the weather for an en-
tire summer is premature.
'The bottomline is thatit's stilltoo
early to call with anything that ap-
proaches accuracy," Edwards says.
Edwards points outthat as ameteo-
rologist he focuses on day-to-day
weather forecasting andclimatologists
look at the long-range view.
