The proposed Michigan Work- Study(MWS)Amendmentisdesigned to expand employment opportunities for state college students in the work- study program while providing a dis- tribution of available funds. "'This amendment will expand the MWS program to include students in- volved in community service organi- zations such as human services andthe arts," saidbillsponsor, stateRep.Lynn Jondahl (D-Okemos). ThecurrentMWSprogramrequires non-profitemployerstopay20percent of a work-study student's wages with the other 80 percent covered by the MWS program. The amendment would allow eli- gible non-profit community service agencies to hire work-study students at no cost. The state would provide 100 percent funding to the employer for work-study students. "Ithink with the increasing costof enrollment and tuition, anything the statecan dotoreduce thecostoftuition is a good thing. Not only does this help students pay for tuition but it provides services to the community as well," state Rep.Lynn Rivers(D-Ann Arbor) said. It is expected the plan will be well- received by many prospective student employees. The work-study program provides students with opportunities to learn in an employment atmosphere and assist themselves in financing their educa- tion, said Vickie Crupper, student em- ployment coordinator in the University's Office of Financial Aid. Onestudentsaidstudentseammore than just money through the work- study program. "I've used work-study as a means of getting research experience. ... It has provided me with contacts and information for future career deci- sions," LSA senior Sonja Van Hala said. In addition to creating more job opportunities, theamendmentincludes a revised allocation formula to redis- tribute existing funds based on the needs of the institution. "During fiscal year 1991-92, over $375,000 in appropriated work-study funds went unused," said Patrick La Pine, legislative director of the Michi- gan Collegiate Coalition, a state stu- dent association. The reallocation formula would distribute the money more equitably. Schools thatneedmoremoney willget more, he added.
