If the White Sox have their way,
Fisk's release will ultimately go down
in history as a "baseball move." How-
ever, it seems too many "baseball
moves" have come at the expense of
the game itself.
Previously this season, Tony Perez,
who was also in the park the night of
Fisk's memorable shot, was let go by
his thirty-something GM Jim Bowden
as a result of a baseball move. Perez,
who most experts thought would be a
fine manager, was allowed only 44
games to prove it in Cincinnati before
he was shown the door.
It isashamethatwomenwhogave
theirhearts and souls to the game were
treated as rookies just sent down to the
minors. Baseballis a business; anyone
naive enough not to believe this need
look no further than these two moves
as proof.
However, in any business you must
treat people with respect, especially if
they have been as loyal to the company
as Fisk and Perez. Maybe some day
Schueler will realize this. I just hope I
amnot"tooold"whenthatday comes.
