The Big Ten conference recently honored Lara Hooiveld, who had ear- lier garnered 1993 Michigan Female Athlete of the Year honors, with the 1993 Suzy Favor-Female Athlete of the Year award, while Brian Gunnwas named to the GTE Academic All- America First Team. Hooiveld scored 27 points in the vote for the Suzy Favor award, receiv- ing seven frst-place and three second- place votes froma panelofl13 Midwest media members and Big Ten officials. She set a new U.S. Open, NCAA Championship, Big Ten, and pool record time of 1:00.47 in winning the 100-yard breaststroke, one of her two titles at the NCAA Championships. Her second victory in the 200 breast (2:12.71), and fifth and seventh place finishes in relay events helpedher cap- tureNCAAFemale-Swimmer-of-the- Year accolades. In addition, Hooiveld successfully defended all four of her Big Ten cham- pionships in Ann Arbor, capturing the 100 and 200 breast awards, and also swimming legs in the 200 and 400 medley relay teams' victories. Hooiveld competed in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul as a 17-year old, and is a 1993 Academic All-Big Ten selection, with a 3.0 grade point aver- age in communication. Gunn graduated from Michigan as a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and with a degree in history. His future plans include law school. Like Hooiveld, Gunn also earned All-Americastatus in fourevents at the NCAA Championships. He swam a leg in both the first-place800 freerelay team and the eighth-place 400 free relay, while individually finishing sec- ond in the 200 butterfly and sixth in the 500 free. Gunn's three conference titles - in the 200 fly and the 400 and 800 free relay -eamed him All-Big Ten hon- ors.
